SOSUEMEI BREEDING & SHOWING POLICY
We have been breeding and showing Lhasa Apsos for over 20 years. During these 20 years we have constantly learnt and we still are learning about this breed. It is a fascinating breed with a wonderful history. Of importance in our breeding program is temperament. The Lhasa Apso is noted for there loyalty, intelligence, stubborness and their sentinel instincts. They command attention and demand reverence. For the show ring we expect our Lhasas to be extremely outgoing and animated, but they also must be that loving pet. For us, bad temperaments are not tolerated, therefore we breed to keep this aspect of the breed out of our lines. Of equal importance is type, balance and quality. Our Lhasas exhibit the natural beauty and soundness that they are known for. They are athletic and enjoy spending time running the acreage. They seem to have a boundless amount of energy but at the end of these energy spurts they love to cuddle. In Canada there is a height disqualification of 11 1/2 inches as to which we adamently breed to stay under. We like our Lhasas to be able to stand in a beautiful balanced profile, yet move "like the wind". There is nothing more attractive than a Lhasa in coat moving effortlessly across the ground. This is accomplished by well laid back shoulders. Lately there has been a push for the Lhasa to become a "head" breed. We feel that it is part of the overall package with no excess emphasis put on it. We like our bites to be level to slightly undershot with good strong teeth, the jaws to be rounded and not snipey, the eyes to be almond shape with little of the whites shown, the nose to be black. We accomplish good pigment in our Lhasas by keeping black in our pedigree. Also, by using blacks we are able to maintain very strong reds without a fading factor. Nowadays to be successful in the showring you must also have good coats. Through genetics as well as nutrition and cleanliness we have been able to maintain good coats on our Lhasas. Our Lhasas do run the acreage with their long coats and get into mud, leaves, branches, dirt, etc. - they must be dogs first, showdogs second. They are fed dried dog food with the combination of vegetable stews (home made with lots of herbs) and CT Support and we use only bottled mineral water. We have spent years on learning the proper methods of grooming and presenting our Lhasas in the showring. We do not breed for the sake of breeding, but only when we need to replace one of our showdogs or breeding stock. We generally will only keep the one that meets up to our show qualifications, therefore we do have quality pets (on non breeding contracts) to offer to loving homes. All of our dogs are lifetime guaranteed for genetic health as well as temperament, also references from current owners of our dogs are available We have been known to be extremely critical of our show stock. But, we feel this is what has given us the winning edge in the showring. Showing and breeding are a hobby and passion of our family and each one of us has an integral part.
