James Strong was born in New York, N.Y. in 1842, the son of immigrant parents. On September 16, 1861 at the age of 18 he joined the 53rd Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers and served as a Private in Company C. On May 10, 1864 during a battle at the Po River he was wounded in the forehead and lay on the battlefield for hours before regaining consciousness. After a brief stay at a field hospital he returned to his unit until November 6, 1864 when he was honorably discharged by reason of expiration of term. After the war he married Martha Megahan on May 7, 1867 and they took up residence in McConnellstown, Pennsylvania. James and Marth had three sons. James died on June 5, 1904. Martha survived him until December 13, 1936. They are buried in the McConnellstown Cemetery.
