Below is a list of my Roses and I have made comments on how they have
performed for me (additions highlighted) (Jan2000
additions)
Modern Roses
Alchemist - saw many photos and liked the colour |
Big Purple - I am a sucker for purple roses, and this
certainly IS a purple rose |
Birthday Present - I love this rose, it has a lovely flush of
the most divine velvet red/black flowers which have a huge fragrance.
Yes a single flowerer, but disease free for me. Died
after being broken off at the rootstock in a bad storm, a sad day,
only got better and better |
Blue Moon - I had heard that this was a fussy rose and
disease prone. In its 2nd year for me now and producing lovely
large blooms of gorgeous colour and fragrance. I have had very
little disease problems with it. |
Candella - Quite stunning in its first year, but no
brushmarks in the second. Nice bright colour though, and the
healthiest, shiniest foliage you could ever wish to see. Never
produced brushmarks like it did the first year, but continued to be very
tall and healthy and a constant bloom producer |
Deep Secret - Another of the red/black fragrant roses.
A bit sickly for me, which is a shame. Still going
and while only produces a few blooms, most are perfect. |
Double Delight - Ahhh, my favourite rose for fragrance and
high on the all time list. I love how the bud is a pristine creamy
white in the centre and as it opens the edges turn scarlet. And on
a warm still evening you can smell it from metres away. Eventually
died as it had some disease. Will replace it though. |
Friesia - The most cheerful yellow I have seen, never fails
to lift my mood. Died after our very hot summer,
was in a pot and couldnt cope with the awful temps we had for several
weeks. |
Hot Chocolate - saw this in flower and bought it on the spot.
A bit of a puzzle of where to plant it and I have decided to plant it in
a group with Friesia and Shocking Blue! Died after
our very hot summer, was in a pot and couldnt cope with the awful temps
we had for several weeks. |
Lagerfeld - Saw this in a book and thought never to have the
opportunity to buy it, and then stumbled across it one day, buying
lilies. A lovely flower and fragrance, I just wish the stems were
a bit more robust and less spindly. |
Love - This is one of the few roses I bought for colour only
(rather than fragrance as well) Ever year it has done better for me and
always gets comments in the garden. Died
after our very hot summer, was in a pot and couldnt cope with the awful
temps we had for several weeks. |
Moody Blues - Personally I think this is a bit pink for a
Blue Rose, but it always performs well in my garden, and is a nice
colour all the same. |
Old Port - This is a nice rose and more people should grow
it. The blooms are large for a floribunda and a lovely 'proper'
purple (no pink or other tonings) and they age into a lovely grey/lilac.
Not a prolific bloomer but constant. |
Oranges and Lemons - I like striped roses, and the gaudiness
of O&L was hard to resist. Flowers are a bit small but the two
colours are distint even as the bloom ages. |
Pascali - My first white rose and I neglected it dreadfully.
It rewarded my efforts on winning Premier Novice Exhibition Bloom at the
CRS show 6 months after being planted in the ground. I am looking
forward to seeing what Pascali can do, treated properly. Moved
this to Christchurch recently, and while it took a while to get going,
now is covered in blooms! Won another Premier for me too.
|
Polar Star - another white rose, that I bought at Autumn
Magic in ChCh. I like white roses in an HT form for some reason
and so I bought this. A potential for the show bench too,
hopefully. Still going strong, took to a
couple of shows but not really show stuff I gather. |
Sheer Bliss - Now I bought this cos it sounded nice, and was
unimpressed the first year. I took summer prunings and planted
them, now I have two. Will give it another chance, as it was a bit
better this year. Well it finally did
produce decent blooms, and they are STUNNING. Unfortunately its
not a great producer of new shoots so I am left with just one main
one. Its a bit of a worry. |
Shocking Blue - The beginning of my love affair with roses,
but it was a difficult rose to find. People always remark on the
colour in photos and don't believe me when I say they are true to life.
Then they see the rose. Fragrance is wonderful and this is a
seriously underrated rose. Died after our very hot
summer, was in a pot and couldnt cope with the awful temps we had for
several weeks. |
Silver Shadow - A chance discovery at Trevor Griffiths.
A Buck rose of the most divine silver blue/pale lilac colour and
wonderful spicy fragrance. Nice HT type blooms |
Superbowl - Had to have this rose after I heard about it.
A hugely fragrant, lilac HT of nice form and I am pleased I bought it.
Way to go Sam! Not so pleased the year after, the
blooms are nice but only briefly and its a bit skimpy on repeat
blooms. Still nice fragrance tho. |
Sylvia - The other name for this rose is
"Congratulations" and I bought it to celebrate my engagement.
Colour is not quite what I expected, but the fragrance is nice, and now
that I am an 'exhibitionist' I can show Sylvia. She
has only continued to get better and better. Big fault is the
petals spot really easy if there is any moisture around but can't fault
the form. |
Tess - Saw the photo in the NRS and
FELL IN LOVE with it. Well had a few flowers off this one, the
early ones were as nice as the photo I saw but this rose doesn't like
moisture, and I had a lot of balling. Grows amazingly slowly and
still got blooms coming on in April, which is a plus. Well
another disappointment, really only gives decent blooms in the cooler
autumn weather, petals have too much substance and too many and they
just ball awfully. And an aphid magnet too. Can't fault the
foliage tho, its very bright green and shiny all season. |
Velvet Fragrance - Another velvety red rose, with divine
fragrance and grows! Has done very well in its second year for
me. |
Austin Roses
Ambridge Rose - Bought this on the urgings of a friend.
Pleased I did, a nice rice coloured rose with yummy fragrance.
Lisa, I can't smell the honey though. Again
another rose that improves with time, more flowers and constantly all
season. |
Brother Cadfael - this has a beautiful rose fragrance, but
balls something chronic for me. Got better
performance out of this, but still balls. Love the colour and the
blooms are huge and wonderfully fragrant. Quite tall and leggy and
sharp thorns too. |
Chianti - My first rose purchase and I have two now both from
Trevor Griffiths. Got absolutely huge in the
garden, several canes well over 2 metres long, had to cut back.
Went beserk! |
Claire Rose - Went to Trevor Griffiths one day, and
discovered they had a 'Buy 3 get One Free' day. Curses! How
to choose? I went through my mental list and matched that with
what was available, and bought home Claire Rose. Spottles in the
rain but a nice pale pink rose. |
Constance Spry - Ah yes Constance of the Thorns. I
forgive her a lot for the amazing display she puts on in spring.
The rose to plant with LOTS of space - preferably up. Again
another rose that improves with time |
Emmanuel - A constant disappointment as it has balled and
balled. Not likely to make it to another year. Kept
it but no better performance. |
Evelyn - I have had just one bloom off Evelyn and have been
impressed, a large bloom distinctly pink fading to yellow and cream with
a noticeable lemon fragrance. Hardly
produces at all but was in a shaded area. Will see. |
Gertrude Jeckyll - GJ was the most powerfully fragrant rose I
had ever smelt. I also could not get over how such lovely fluffy
flowers came from such elegant buds. Got quite
tall and leggy but was at the back against a fence, as I was prepared
for this. |
Glamis Castle - I have not got enough white roses, and had
heard only good things about this one. A more cupped rose than I
expected but nice fragrance. Hmmm still in two
minds about this one. Grows quite small and messily and the petals
dont hold well, but it is white! |
Golden Celebration - I was talked into buying this and I am
pleased I did. A warm, rich, golden yellow and fragrance to die
for. Bush is a bit floppy and needs staked to keep the blooms out
of the dirt. OH I LOVE THIS ROSE!!! Got
better the next year with some judicious pruning and OH the flowers are
divine. Cant wax eloquently enuf. BUY IT nuff said. |
Heritage - not impressed with Heritage at all I am afraid.
Won't make another summer |
Jayne Austin - quite nice fragrance and colour, flowers a
little small though Again another rose that
improves with time, more flowers and constantly all season. |
L D Braithwaite - last year was very
nice, but suffering from bugs this year and not looking well, has now
been removed. |
Leander - This is one of my favourite roses, it grows in a
nice shape, is nearly thornless, the healthiest rose in my garden.
I get a long summer flowering and a shorter autumn one. I like how
the buds are a warm rich orangey apricot and age into a parchment ivory
colour Again another rose that improves with time,
more flowers and constantly all season. |
Mary Rose- A nice pink but the petals just blow away at the
slightest hint of weather |
Pretty Jessica - From memory a relation
of Tamora which I love, so had to try it. Not
sure what its like, my roses got mixed up when we moved. |
Prospero - Another dark red, it's flowers are a bit small,
but a nice shape and it flowers constantly |
Radio Times - Another nice pink with
AWESOME fragrance from Trevor Griffiths. Not
sure what its like, my roses got mixed up when we moved. |
Redoute - this is a new one for me and I think I like it, the
pale pink is much more sophisticated than Mary Rose Again
another rose that improves with time, more flowers and constantly all
season. |
Sharifa Asma - Potentially a lovely rose, but it is in its
first season, and judgement is underway Again
another rose that improves with time, more flowers and constantly all
season. |
St Swithun - Large fragrant pale pink blooms, a bit straggly
but I like it Again another rose that improves
with time, more flowers and constantly all season. |
St Cecilia - not very outstanding this
year, maybe next summer. Again another rose
that improves with time, more flowers and constantly all season. |
The Dark Lady - Probably the most prolific red Austin for me,
always in flower Again another rose that improves
with time, more flowers and constantly all season. |
The Prince - This is a beautiful rose, with the most gorgeous
colour. This year it has been a bit washed out but the fragrance
is lovely. Continues to get better and
better. I reccomend it esp for cut flowers, as these last much
better than many of the other Austins. |
Tradesant - Another dark red which looks very nice with The
Prince in a bunch Again another rose that improves
with time, more flowers and constantly all season. |
Warwick Castle - I thought this had fragrance, but have been
unable to detect any. A nice rose of the form that I like, and
very floriferous. Still undecided. |
Winchester Cathedral - Not going to make it another year in
my garden, a poor performer for me Got worse but
stayed cos I cant bear to remove a rose LOL |
OGR's
Blairii No 2 - Decided on reading about this one day that
this was going to be mine. Went through some terrible trials and
tribulations before it began to do well (not the roses fault).
Terrible for white fly but lovely blooms and divine fragrance.
Threatening to take over my garden already. Planted
in the ground and it went beserk. Severely pruned and restrained
but never saw its end result as we moved the winter after. Killer
thorns tho! |
Fantin Latour - Another eventual must have. Not seen it
flower yet. Lost the potted version of this,
will get again one day when I have room and a house. |
Honorine de Brabant - Striped fragrant rose, what more could
I ask for. I like it. |
Multiflora de la Grifferaie - Lovely colour, but only still a
little plant for me. Got quite leggy once
planted in the garden. Interesting soft furry apple green foliage,
still not a great performet but only a toddler yet. |
Sombrieul - this was fantastic last year but El Nino has
taken its toll here. Flowered constantly all summer in abundance,
and was always commented on. Hmm never
performed like that again. Planted in the garden and it appeared
to revert to a climber. Eventually threw some flowers but a bit
startling. |
Souvenir de la Malmaison - Woe is me. This was adorable
last year except for powdery mildew. Not a sign of that, or blooms
as El Nino strikes again. The worst balling ever. It is
such a shame cos I really like this rose. Never
performed the same as the first year, really struggles which breaks my
heart. I love this rose. |
Mini / Patio Roses
Aladdin - saw this in a shop and liked the colour. This
was my first 'small' rose purchase. Didnt do
very well tho. |
Cafe Ole - the coffee coloured sport of
Winter Magic, an unusual colour and I like it, lovely buds. Quite
a small plant but this year I probably got 1/3 coffee coloured blooms,
and even got pix! |
Irresistable - I wanted a nice white mini for Floral Art.
This fits the bill nicely. |
Orchid Lace - I have been hearing nice things about this rose
for a while so I caved in and bought it. Pleased I did and hoping
to get it on the Show Bench one day. Died in
the awful hot summer we had. |
Moonlight Lady - a famous rose from the
Eagles in Chch, and I got it for the Show Bench, but I like it as a rose
too. Hmm I forgot I had bought this. |
Silver - a nice pink/purple mini,
unregistered I think, but worth having anyway. Possibly
died as I forgot to water it. |
Strawberry Swirl - Another striped rose I couldn't resist
Died in the awful hot summer we had. |
Winter Magic - Now this is a nice rose. Colour is
reminiscent of Silver Shadow with a hint more lilac in it.
An interesting colour and hopefully a potential winner. Hmm
got some disease in it, still coping but I am concerned. Nice
blooms tho and even beloved comments on the colour. |
