From the information I have it is my feeling that I was possibly one of the black market adoptions reported on by John Donnelly with the Miami Herald back in 1993. The Kefauver Hearings of 1963 also involve the black market adoptions of that time. I was told I was born in Miami, Florida, in a private hospital on September 24, 1937. Within seven hours of my birth I was given to my adoptive parents. At the age of six my adoptive mother attempted to enroll me in school; a birth certificate was required and apparently they did not have one so I was issued what is called a "delayed birth certificate" and allowed to enter school. At the age of 14 I was informed I was adopted but no information offered at that time. In 1993 or 4 I attempted to obtain the birth certificate in the name I was given (Dorothy Elizabeth Sherman) by my birth mother and it seems I had two birth certificates on file with the Bureau of Vital Statistics. They became quite upset and immediately sealed the one in the name of Dorothy Elizabeth Sherman. This is another clue, in a legal adoption, the judge would have ordered the original birth certificate closed and yet this one was not. Apparently this was not a legal adoption. My adoptive father is deceased but my adoptive mother is alive and reluctant to talk with me about the circumstances. I have had breast cancer which makes the medical history even more important. My children have a right to know what and how unknown medical information would affect them.
