I seem to be the Sr. Parent in this group with a 40 year old autistic/non-verbal/multihandicapped/blind son who lives with me and his mother (all his life.) I know the "misery loves company" syndrome that seems to help, particularly, new parents - so having a site like this is a blessing. I try to help by sharing my experiences, which only has commonality when it comes to knowing the system. I hope to inaug rate a site soon under the aegis of the MHB Foundation, Inc. which my wife and I started in 1979. When we do, we'll link it here.

Very thorough and well done. It is correct that it is never to early to start thinking about adult housing. My daughter is 9 and lives at a residential school. I worry about adult housing even now.

I have a 9 year old son with autism. With other parents, I have formed a non-profit company to develop and operate accommodated housing within the southeastern Pennsylvania region for adults with autism. The children of most of our members are in their ea ly 20s. The organization, Autism Living and Working, has obtained an agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to provide, on a pilot basis, 100% of the funding for program and supportive services for 10 persons with autism. We are now looking for o r initial 10 units. We are likely to start with rental housing, but hope to raise foundation grants to meet the capital cost of purchasing and/or building additional units in the future.

This looks like a great link for people involved in the "autism community." I am currently working in a classroom with children with autism who range from 6-8 years of age. I would love input from other professionals working with the population as well a parents who might shed some light on these beautiful and special children who have captivated my heart! Keep up the good work here!

We have two grandsons with autism. Our daughter's son is near five years old and does not talk and is still diapers. His special school is having a hard time with him. He is manic depressed also, is this usual? His parents are divorced and he now live with another mildly autistic step-brother that is five years old. They have a very active household with another 3 years old ADD step brother. The oldest child is six, our granddaughter, who appears to quite bright. We have concerns for her welfare an protection. She seems to have to help take care of the three boys with learning disabilities. This family lives in Reno, NV. Our son's boy is 5 years old and talks at about a 2 to 3 year level. He has been out of diapers for two years. This family lives in Harrison, Michigan.

Our son in 9, has D.S. and a dx of Autism for about a year. He is the youngest of 8 children: next older sib is l8 and graduating in June. Matt is verbal, reads, and has a great personality. His independent and social skills are a bigger challenge. The greatest challenge of all is trying to get professionals to think outside of the "box".

I'm the father of a 40 year-old totally blind, non-verbal, multihandicapped/autistic son who resides with me and his 80 year-old mother. We are currently, his joint caregivers. Jamee has been attending a community program 5 days a week to which I drive im both ways 8:30 am/2 pm. He has been in this program for 11 years and for the first 10 years, he, along with a job coach, worked in a movie theatre twice a week. Unfortunately, the theatre was sold and a new job has not been forthcoming. As most parents, we are concerned for hi future and have taken a number of steps to provide for him after we are unable to do so. As such, I have become extremely knowledgeable about Special Needs Trusts, having created one, and willing to share our experience with whomever has similar interes .

Our website needs a logo or banner. We're having a contest for the best design. If you're a graphic artist (or "wannabe") and would like to design a banner or logo for our website, you can post your design here using html tags. The only requirement is that the design must incorporate the name of the website, Autism Community, and must conform to the following size specifications -
Banner: 468x60 pixels and no more than 8KB
Logo:     88x31 pixels to 216x108 pixels (approximately)
