Intentional Communities/Co-Housing


• Bruderhof Communities is a community movement of families and single men and women, living in 7 communities in New York, Pennsylvania, and southern England. The basis of our communal life is Christ's Sermon on the Mount, in particular the teachings concerning brotherly love and love of enemies, mutual service, nonviolence and the refusal to bear arms.

• CoHousing Company - The CoHousing Company is an architectural and consulting firm that works with resident groups and developers to create communities that cluster private homes around extensive common facilities. Pioneers of the cohousing movement, Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett draw extensively on their direct experience with European and American CoHousing communities to provide workshops and services in the areas of group formation and facilitation, site search and acquisition, land development, architectural design, project management, and finance.

• Co-Housing Network - Co-housing is the name of a type of collaborative housing that attempts to overcome the alienation of modern subdivisions in which no-one knows their neighbors, and there is no sense of community. It is characterized by private dwellings with their own kitchen, living-dining room etc, but also extensive common facilities. The common building may include a large dining room, kitchen, lounges, meeting rooms, recreation facilities, library, workshops, childcare. Usually, cohousing communities are designed and managed by the residents, and are intentional neighborhoods: the people are consciously committed to living as a community; the physical design itself encourages that and facilitates social contact.

• Global Eco-Village Network - Eco-Villages are attempts to create complete, working communities in which people can live sustainably, in harmony with each other and nature. There is a concise history of GEN for those who are new to the concept of eco-villages.

• EcoVillage at Ithaca - EcoVillage at Ithaca (EVI) is a budding intentional community dedicated to exploring and modeling innovative approaches to ecological and social sustainability. We're creating a unique habitat which includes cohousing, organic agriculture, cottage industries, an education center, and natural areas. (New York)

• Housing Co-ops - Cooperative housing is not a new concept. This country's first housing cooperative was organized in New York City in the late 1800s. Today, more than 1 million units of cooperative housing are scattered throughout the United States, with large numbers located in major urban areas like New York City, Chicago and Washington. Housing cooperatives are a form of multifamily homeownership. In a housing cooperative, there are two owners, the cooperative corporation and the corporation's owners, who are typically known as tenant-stockholders.

• L'Arche is an international federation of communities in which people with an intellectual disability and those who chose to join them live, work and share their lives together in an atmosphere of trust, friendship, belonging and forgiveness.

• Living in Community - In Denmark, 1978, a group of some 100 people who wished to establish a living and working commune bought a large farm. As of 1990, there are about 100 adults and 60 children living at 'Svanholm'. They live in groups of from five to twenty-five in buildings that are spread about the farm. Each person has his or her own room, while the group has a common kitchen and sitting-rooms. Meals are generally communal, with washing up and general cleaning on a rotating basis.

We feel a spiritual connection with the earth and with one another and celebrate the interrelatedness of all life. We get satisfaction from being able to do things ourselves, whether its making butter and cheese, repairing old machines, making our own entertainment or building our own buildings.
