Etiquette of the Hat

A hat of some description should be worn almost always. Where the wearing of the hat is not required, it may still be proper. Exceptions to the wearing of the hat may include occasions where the soldier or officer may be indoors, and always applies when the soldier or officer is present at divine services, without regard to whether it is indoors or outdoors. It is always appropriate to remove covers when in the presence of the God of heaven who reigns over all and to whom all honor is due.

On those occasions when soldiers may neglect their etiquette regarding those times when it is appropriate to remove covers, it is incumbent upon their fellows and their superiors, if any be present, to remind them of their breach of etiquette.

When meeting ladies on the street, remember that it is incumbent upon the ladies who know you to make the first gesture of acknowledgment, and for ladies unknown to you to proceed with their business as if you were never seen. Whether or not the lady known to you acknowledges your presence, it is always appropriate for men in uniform to salute them or to doff covers as a greeting, as is indicated in Regulation 15. Should a lady require information of you, such as directions to a place or other helpful advice a stranger might be reasonably assumed to be able to offer, she is to be greeted with the same courtesies as a lady known to you.
