Melvin lived with his father and step-mother for several years after the death of his mother, but left home at about 14 and worked on a farm while attending school in Marysville, PA. The 1920 census confirms that he was not living with his father. At no time during the year+ that he worked on the farm did his father attempt to contact him. He finally missed his father and sister enough that he went home, but did not stay long. He worked on the farm of his step mother's brother (Earl Rhinehart in Perry Co., PA). He eventually went to York, PA where he lived with his Aunt and Uncle Nunemaker (his mother's sister). He worked at many jobs over the years, never being afraid of hard work. He finally retired from Shaull Equipment Co. in Lemoyne, PA at about 68 years old.

He never graduated from high school, but was proud that his 3 children did graduate from high school.

Melvin was a proud man and during the depression insisted on working rather that take welfare. He was finally given a job as a supervisor on a WPA project to build a park in Camp Hill, PA. For this he got $15.00 per week.

A 4 piece silver plate tea service that belonged to his mother was bought at auction by his aunt Bert and after he married mother, Aunt Bert gave them then tea set. It is not known whether the tea set was a wedding present for Melvin and Daisy or not, or who might have given it to them. This information comes from mother.
