During the Civil War, John Green Broughton
joined the Confederate Army. The records filed in the War Department
in Washington D.C. indicate John G. was living in Choctaw County
Mississippi when he enlisted on May 12, 1863 at Jackson, Mississippi.
He was assigned to Company G, 5th Mississippi Cavalry and served
under General Forrest. In an application for a pension years
later, John G. stated he was in "paroled or discharged"
in Tupelo Mississippi in 1864 and that he was in Greensboro Mississippi
when the Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General
U. S. Grant. However, according to the War Department-Adjutant
General's Office, the last record - a "Muster roll March
& April 1864" dated May 14, 1864 - on file in Washington
DC shows J. G. deserted February 15, 1864 at Grenada, Mississippi.
For that reason when, at the age of 83, John Green Broughton
applied for a Confederate pension in 1931, the Louisiana Board
of Pension Commissioners denied his request. SOURCE: [War & Soldiers Resource Page] To submit your Broughton genealogy information to BFT, become a Contributing Researcher. Join the CR Project.
