Heartland Helping Hands Presents: - Genealogy Resources on the Internet - | ![]() |
Although Genealogy is best done by using your Local Library, LDS (nicknamed "Mormon") Family History Centers, and by information given to you by your family members, there are also tons of resources right here on the internet you can use too.
There are Mailing Lists you can join, with so many people who not only ask for help, but offer their help in return. There are some Ship Passanger Lists transcribed on line, Free Family Tree CD Lookup offers..I could go on and on...
There is a wealth of information out there on the internet and I have done my best to try and bring some of it to you by providing some links below. I hope they will be as helpful to you in your research as they are in mine.
Family Search | Family Search is a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) (nicknamed "Mormons") web site, They have a data base that you can use to look up microfilm numbers to order at your local LDS Family History Center as well as a data base where you can enter your family name to see if your family name is listed on the International Genealogy Index. |
Ancestry.com | Ancestry has both "pay for" and "free" data bases.
Some of the "pay for" data bases include census, birth, death, land, marriage and military records on line. Their free data bases includes The Social Security Death Index. If you find your ancestor's name, there is letter you can download and print to send to the Social Security Administration for a copy of your ancestors Social Security Application. |
National Archives and Records Administration | N.A.R.A. is a "must-go" to web site. They supply all types of information on Naturalization, Census Records, Military Records and Passanger Arrival Records. You can send them electronic mail requesting the forms required to obtain this information, and even requests for index cards to Naturalizations. |
RootsWeb | Rootsweb has a ton of Mailing Lists you can join, and not just focused on Genealogy. They have mailing lists for almost every State and Country and from Ships Lists and Surname Lists to Cemetery Lists. This is another data base that is a must. You can find Gedcoms and find out about different Genealogy Projects that are going on. |
