Charles Wesley Ault Born January 10, 1824 in Roane County, Tennessee |
Charles Wesley Ault was married to Leah Emmeline Smith on June 27, 1844 in Rhea County, Tennessee. They were the parents of four sons and two daughters, including Olinda Josephine Ault, my 2nd great-grandmother. Charles was a 2nd Sergeant in Company A of the 1st (Carter's) Tennessee Cavalry, part of the Confederate Army. He enlisted April 15, 1862 in Sulphur Springs, Tennessee, and he was enlisted for the length of the war. His soldier service file says that he deserted, but in his own words (from his pension application), "About three or four weeks before Lee surrendered I went home on leave of absence and did not get back to my command before the surrender, and therefore did not get any discharge." Later in life, Charles also married a woman named Manerva, and they had at least one son together while living in Tennessee. Charles' date of death is unknown. |
