Born Jonathon David Buck in Rhode Island in 1974, Jon B. was raised in California by his father, a music professor, and his mother, a concert pianist. The young musician spent much of his youth in his grandparents' record store listening to all kinds of music. He also learned to play guitar, keyboards, drums and bass; musical skills that would come in handy in his late teens when he started penning songs. After great success as a songwriter, Jon B. received his own record contract from Yab Yum/550 Music, and released Bonafide in 1995. The album went gold, spawning the Top 40 single "Pretty Girl," and the Top 10 hit "Someone to Love." Like Babyface before him, Jon B. continued writing for other artists, and scored several more hits for acts like Toni Braxton, After 7 and Color Me Badd.Jon B. released his second album, Cool Relax, in September 1997. The record featured contributions from several popular artists including Gerald Levert, Babyface, K-Ci and Jo Jo from Jodeci and A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
