Jon B live at the Key Club
Jon B performed live at the Key Club July 28, 2002 in Hollywood, California. Although I wasn't able to make that one, I have a review of the show from a fan that was there. Enjoy!
"The Key club is a pretty good venue. Many other soul artists have appeared
there recently such as Chico Debarge and my girl, Amel Larrieux. They are
promoting what is called Neo Soul with live band and music. There are 3 levels to
this place - the main floor with counters l in to put your drink on and lounge type
furniture to sit The dance floor is in front of the stage. The stage must be about 4
feet or so above the dance floor. There is also a balcony area above that looks
down onto the stage where you can sit a table, order food and drink (booze $10 per
drink) and watch the show. When they finally let people in it was well after 9 PM.
You could hear old school soul music being played by the DeeJay. Finally the show
starts. The host announces that Jamie Fox and Babyface and Tracy are in the
house. Spotlight to balcony. Wave from above celebrities. The opening act was a
lady named Daisy who happened to be celebrating her birthday. She was nervous
and or had been sick so when she started to sing she had to stop the band after a
few bars.
She began again with a lot of encouragement from the audience. The audience by
the way was a big mix of all types of ethnicities. Everyone was well represented.
Unfortunately I can not remember what she sang. She covered, I think, a popular
artist's song but I can't remember the song. Anyhow, she left and the tension
increase because everyone wanted to see Jon B . The emcee kidded who wants to
go home with Jon B tonight. Of course there was a huge response from the females
in the audience. So without further adieu Jon comes on stage. The audience is
wild, screaming and whooping. He is wearing a Gucci fedora, some kind of jean
jacket, blue jeans with the fading in the rear worn very low, tennis shoes that
buckle, and long sleeve shirt and dark shades. He looks grrrrreat of course. He sits
down behind the Rhodes and starts playing. Some of the songs I can remember (not
in order) are: Cool Relax, Are You Still Down- Jon rapped the Tupac part, 2 Stevie
Wonder songs, All I Do and one I can't remember cause I'm not familiar with that
particular song. They Don't Know (which he eluded to as being his anthem) he
really got down on that song. He did some ad libbing on this one, Finer Things with
N8E doing the Nas part. He sang the duet Overjoyed with a backup singer and
Don't Talk. He did a little dancing on the stage showing that he can dance like a
brotha. He played the hell out of the keys. At one point the house band stopped
and he was playing by himself. At this concert he was Jon B the musician, more
than Jon B the singer. At one point during the concert he gave some of the ladies in
the audience roses. Then he gave out some more before the end. At the close he
thanked Babyface and Tracy and his parents who were in the audience also. Of
course he gave kudos to the audience. One thing I forgot to say is they were taping
the performance and getting a lot of shots of the audience so maybe it will be shown
somewhere on television. Also they announced that Jack Herrera album was being
released in 2003."
