Midsummer 2001
This year we celebrated Midsummer in Seabrook, on
the docks at Clear Lake. In addition to the usual suspects, our guests included
Bjorn Patsson and Shelly Delbridge of Irmin's Way, and friend and mentor
Alice Karlsdottir of the Rune-Guild.
Folks started arriving at about 10 am to help prepare the feast and catch up on the latest gossip. By noon everything was in order and we headed down to the lake to begin the rite. We tried a new variation on an old tradition this year. In ancient days our ancestors would strangle live humans and sacrifice them into bogs. Since we had no volunteers, we sacrificed a breadman instead, which Kendra baked special for the occasion. We gave the breadman a name and orlog, and then everyone present whispered a brief message for him to deliver to Nerthus for us. Then we strangled him with a rope and tossed him to the waves. A feast and sumble followed the rite, with much singing and boasting. |
