“Welcome home,” I welcome my husband as he comes through the door, giving him a quick peck on the cheek, then move to the side so our children can barrel into him. “Anything exciting this week?”
We’d both apologized to each other after I returned with G’kar, each of us with two of our own books. Things weren’t easy, especially at first, but we got things to work.
He looked first at the children, then at me; I haven’t seen him wearing that somber face in long years. Something bad happened, I just know it. “Year twenty,” he tells me, and I know what he means without the need to scan.
John Sheridan is dead. For all the harsh words we’ve exchanged over the years, from me working for Babylon Five, to when I was fighting to get G’karolnen - the telepath homeworld - admitted to an equal position among the older starfarers within the Interstellar Alliance.
I just wish I’d been there to say goodbye to him, to shake his hand. Or at least to stand in the same room, not killing each other
Zack’s finished hugging Connie, and is about to pick up Al for a hug when he sees what I now see:
“Constance Koshnarenek Allan, you take that bowl off of your baby brother!” Ahh, the joys of parenthood. How did I ever make do before?
“But Al said he wanted a helmet so he could fight Shadow-drones,” our daughter defends herself with, refering to some holographic game she’d gotten for her last birthday. The word ‘Shadow’ doesn’t scare her, doesn’t even bother her; say ‘Vorlon’ around her, and she hides under her bed.
As for our son’s name.....It was Zack’s idea, really. He said that we could raise a better Al than the Corps did......and it’d probably honk’em off royally too. Speaking of which, I wonder whatever happened to Bester.
Dutifully, Connie takes the bowl off of Al’s head. They’re both nice and obedient: no ‘terrible twos’ with them. Zack picks up Al, hugs him, and they go off towards the kitchen to plot out dinner.
Connie’s met Sheridan twice, one of those was the only time Al ever met him. Al was too little to have remembered anything - if he’s normal, I remind myself. And Connie...
“Can we go for a walk?” Connie asks me.
“Sure,” I tell her, “just as soon as you put your glasses on.” She mumbles something about me being no fun, but retrieves her tinted glasses from off the table; we're the only ones who know about her glowing eyes, and we'd like to keep it that way! “We’ll be back soon,” I call to Zack, repeating the message telepathically.
He doesn’t mind me doing that -- its the other telepaths that annoy him -- and after sitting in endless meetings with them, I’m starting to agree.
I open the door so we can start.
