Wings over Michigan
Photo of the Month

March's Photo of the month is of a Northern Flicker fledgling
Colaptes auratus
Photos by Heather Slayton, Warren, Michigan

Photo taken with a Minolta XG-1 camera, 80-200 mm zoom lens and fill-in flash. Kodak 200ASA film.

On a recent trip to the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario my husband, Ken, and I stopped along Highway #6 at a Fry Truck for lunch while on our way to Bruce Peninsula National Park. While enjoying our meal we overheard quite a racket coming from the adjoining woods. We found it to be a nest of Northern Flickers who were being actively fed by their dedicated parents. One overly exuberant youth was left hanging outside the nesting cavity after the feeding session and his nest mates would not let him back in. After a few minutes of struggle he gave up and plumetted to the forest floor beneath. In my excitement I missed the exact location of his fall and had to enlist the services of Ken to help me pinpoint the fledgling. He was frightened yet unharmed after his unplanned journey away from home. He allowed me to get within a few feet of him to get this photograph. This remains one of my fondest memories of "The Bruce".
