Articles || TV Guide, June 24-30, 2000 "Heaven a Good Time" Beverley Mitchell has no problem playing the wholesome, boy-crazy Lucy Camden on 7th Heaven. In fact, she thinks it's a match made in...well, you know.
Back in the third grade, Beverley Mitchell's life was pure hell. The 19-year-old star of the popular WB family drama, 7th Heaven, who has been working professionally since she was barely our of diapers, faced a daily dose of such merciless teasing by her classmates for being on TV that she couldn't stand going to school. "I used to make myself sick so I wouldn't have to go," Mitchell recalls. The hostility became so unbearable, she says, she was finally force to transfer. But does she bear any grudges against her young tormentors? Heavens no. "I'm an optimistic person," Mitchell explains. "I try to see everything in a positive light. There's no sense in being negative about things, because it just makes your life awful." Sounds like a moral straight out of 7th Heaven, and a line that easily could have popped out of 17-year-old middle daughter Lucy Camden's mouth. In fact, in many ways it would be easy to assume that Mitchell and her rather wholesome TV counterpart are one and the same. Self-assured, earnest, brimming with enthusiasm, Mitchell is a dedicate student (she just finished her freshman year studying film at a small liberal-arts college in Los Angeles); she's close to her parents ("They're my best friends"); and she's committed to community service ("Giving back is shat life's about."). Today, relaxing in a stylish cafe near Beverly Hills, wearing skintight pink capris and a white spaghetti-strap top, Mitchell appears miles more sophisticated than Lucy. And although she concedes she and Lucy are "very, very similar," she's quick to point out, "I'm not as boy crazy." (She says she has loads of guy friends yet isn't dating anyone special.) But the two really are a match made in you-know-where. Observes 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton: "I don't think Beverley's tainted by her experience in Hollywood, as a lot of young people are. She's intelligent and driven, just a very solid person with good values." Born in the Southern California community of Arcadia, Mitchell is the only child of David, an auto-racing promoter, and Sharon, an office manager, who are now divorced. (When not at school, Mitchell lives with her mom in the San Fernando Valley.) She was just 4 years old when she threw a temper tantrum in public during a mall outing with her aunt and caught the eye of a talent manager, who, admiring her spunk, gave her aunt his card. Mitchell landed her first gig - an AT&T commercial - within a year. Appearances on Melrose Place and Baywatch followed, and roles in such TV-movies as the creepy "White Dwarf." Then came7th Heaven. Four years later, Mitchell's enthusiasm for the series and its sensitivity toward teen issues is, she says, greater than ever. "We have had such an opportunity to be on a show that cna touch people's lives," she says. "We're not just entertaining them." Her fervor must show: According to Hampton, Mitchell receives more fan mail than anyone else on 7th Heaven (Mondays, 8pm/ET). Mitchell's positive attitude apparently contrasts with that of Jessica Biel, 18, who plays Lucy's older sister, Mary on the series, but is in fact a year younger than her costar. Earlier this year, Biel posed semi-nude in a men's magazine in an attempt to try and get out of her 7th Heaven contract so that she might pursue a movie career. In the accompanying interview, Biel said that she often grabs Mitchell's breasts to annoy her on the set. For her part, Mitchell plays down any conflict. "We're like sisters," she declares with a determined smile. "I can't say that our relationship is perfect. We've gotten in fights and stuff. But she's definitely one of my best friends." As for the article and photos, Mitchell shrugs. "It was her decision. It wouldn't be my decision. She says she made a mistake. So, whatever." Mitchell is far more focused on her summer plans. A veteran of such community-service organizations as Make-A-Wish, she's establishing her own charitable foundation to provide after-school activities for needy kids. She's also developing her own line of clothing and preparing for both her fifth season with 7th Heaven and her second year of college. "I'm grateful for what God has given me," Mitchell says. "I just want to live my life the best I can and make the best out of what time I have here on earth. I'm gonna do my thing here, and I'm gonna make my life be worth something." Heaven knows she probably will. |
