Maria is more upset than everyone thought.
Chapter 2
Maria DeLuca pulled her alien antennae off her head and violently threw them in her locker. Another long day had passed and it was time to go home. Maybe then she could finally just collapse on her bed and cry. Cry for the love she finally gave up on. She’d been holding on to that rope for so long, so long that her hands were burnt and now she couldn't hold it any longer. She untied her apron and stuffed it in her locker with the headband she hated so much. Slamming the door shut with a little too much force she leaned her forehead against it. She was so tired. Letting her eyes close heavily she sighed. Someone stepped into the room and immediately her eyes flew open, her back stiffening. She knew who it was; she’d know that vibe anywhere.
“What do you want Michael?” She asked defeated. He came closer and stood directly behind her. Maria could smell is cologne and it made her weak in the knees. ‘Why does he have to smell so good?’ She thought as she allowed herself to breathe him in.
“I want to show you something.” Maria once again closed her eyes. She wanted him to think that she was debating whether or not to go with him, but it wasn’t true. She’d follow him anywhere and the reality scared her to death. Nodding reluctantly, she pulled away from the locker and grabbed her bag she’d thrown carelessly on the floor.
“I’m going to get changed first.” She disappeared into the employee bathroom without looking at him. Once inside she closed the door quickly and ran to the faucet. Turning on the tap, she doused her face in the icy cold water. She’d always loved water. The way it washes over everything, taking the pain away. She could get lost in it for hours. When she was a kid she’d float in the lake not far from her house and look up at the clouds. She’d watch as the day started turning to night and reluctantly pulled herself out of the sanctuary it had become to return to a life of yelling and fights as her mother called. She’d spent most of the summer down there, sitting on the shore or floating in the middle, trying to loose the pain in its cool depths. It was always her first instinct to run to the water. A comfort she still knew.
Snapping out of her trance, Maria quickly got changed and returned to the tall brooding boy that waited on the other side of the door. Walking straight past him, out to her car, she still refused to look at him. She was vaguely aware of his presence behind her, following her to the Jetta. Who was she kidding? She was overly aware of his presence. He seared her with his proximity. Silently she got into the passenger side and waited for Michael to join her.
They drove in silence, Maria staring aimlessly out into the expanse of desert. She was slightly startled by the sudden sound of music filling the car. She listened as a familiar song played over the speakers, entering her subconscious and forcing her to close her eyes to will the tears away.
“You found hope
You found faith
Found how fast she could take it away
Found true love
Lost your heart
Now you don't know who you are”
Michael pulled the car to a stop in front of a large rock formation, the formation that held the pods of Michael and the other Czechoslovakians. Michael got out of the car and waited for her to join him. Slowly and reluctantly Maria opened her door and stepped out into the hellish heat of the Roswell desert.
She made it easy
Made it free
Made you hurt till you couldn't see
Sometimes it stops
Sometimes it flows
Baby that is how love goes
“Where are we?” Michael took her hand before she could protest and pulled her up toward the rock face. He dropped her hand and raised his. Maria watched with little fascination as a silver handprint appeared under Michael’s. Suddenly the rock opened like a door and Maria jumped slightly. Again Michael took her hand and pulled her inside. To say she was a little creeped out at seeing the sight of her non-boyfriend’s birth was an understatement to say the least.
“Follow me.” Maria smiled slightly. It wasn’t a smile of happiness but rather a sarcastic smile.
“Do I have much of a choice?” She muttered softly to his retreating back. She really didn’t want to crawl through that disgusting pod thing but followed anyway. When she got through, Maria looked up to see a strange cone suspended in the center of a very strange room.
“It’s a secret no one tells
One day its heaven
One day its hell
It’s no fairytale
Take it from me
That’s the way it’s supposed to be”
“MICHAEL: Meet the reason I haven't been returning your phone calls.
MARIA: My God. What is it?
MICHAEL: I don't know...but eventually I'm hoping we can find out.
MARIA: "We?" You didn't even choke on that.
MICHAEL: Well, today I had a little history lesson, and here's the thing...I owe more to you than I can imagine. To Liz, Alex, Valenti, to some old guy named Hal who lives in Tampa and plays shuffleboard. I never realized it...so here it is.
MICHAEL: Thank you.
MARIA: You're welcome.”
As Maria stood looking at the Alien that had stolen her heart, a fleeting thought crossed her mind. “Maybe I haven’t lost it all?” She smiled slightly and sighed softly as a little pain was eased and her heart became less heavy.
You will fly and
You will crawl
God knows even angel’s fall
No such thing as you lost it all
God knows even angel’s fall
THE END
