The resounding thud at the door brought Michael Guerin out of a deep sleep. Prying himself from the dream world and into reality he heard the voice calling to open the door. Valenti. He knew what this was about; it was about the pocketknife they’d found. Peeling himself from the bed he stumbled towards the door. It was what came next that he never expected. Valenti turned him around forcibly and placed him under arrest. Michael couldn’t help his eyes from wandering to his bedroom. It was dark and he could only just make out the bed, an empty bed. He quickly scanned his eyes around the apartment, but everything was completely still. Relieved, he allowed himself to be taken outside and ‘escorted’ to the sheriff’s station.

The insistent knocking at the door brought Maria slowly out of her slumber, but the body moving beside her dragged her out of it. Quickly gaining her senses she pulled the sheet from the bed and wrapped it tightly around her naked body. She jumped out of bed and leaned into the corner of the wall, blind to the visitors at the door. She stood, frozen, as the sheriff’s words filtered through her ears. Michael was under arrest. Daring to peek out towards the front door, she locked eyes with Michael as he was escorted past the window and out to the parking lot. Sinking to the ground tears lightly streamed down her cheeks silently. As her mind cleared the fear set in.

~~ Earlier that Night ~~

Maria apprehensively knocked on the door of Michael’s apartment. He had sent her a message to meet him there. She knew what it was about. She had two choices, alien or alien urges. Noticing the absence of the Jeep in the parking lot it could only be one thing. Michael answered the door immediately; he’d been waiting for her. Before Maria could process what was happening, his arm had snaked around her waist and pulled her into the apartment, his lips attacking her neck. Maria bit her lip to stop herself from moaning.

Michael directed her into the bedroom; he removed her clothes quickly without her even noticing. She was in a daze; her whole life had been flying past in a daze since the first night he came to her. He came and stole that final part of her that he had yet to possess. Now he possessed all of her. She was marked as his and there was no escape.

Gently he laid her down on his bed and claimed her once again. Maria moaned in spite of herself. The feelings he was creating inside of her bombarded her senses until the world disappeared and only he existed. He collapsed on top of her, the two breathless and gently kissed her neck. Rolling off her, Michael pulled Maria into his arms and closed his eyes as he felt the dampness of her cheeks that always came after. He cursed himself for the pain he was causing and smoothed his hand up and down the length of her back in an attempt to comfort. Closing his eyes, the exhaustion got the better of him and he drifted off to unconscious.

Maria laid watching Michael as he slept. She should have left but she couldn’t pry herself away from him. It was at times like this, when he was asleep that she could really dream. She could pretend that the pain wasn't there. She could pretend that they lived a life other than their own, wherever thing was right and the fear was gone.

Raising her head from their resting-place on her hands Maria wiped her tears away roughly. She stood from the floor and searched the apartment for her clothes. Dressing quickly she rushed out of the apartment and ran back to her house. The streets were deserted and the sky was black. Looking up at the stars she cursed them, cursed the world that forced Michael to break her heart every night. Silently entering her house through her bedroom window, Maria collapsed on her bed and laughed coldly. No one had noticed her walking to Michael’s, no one noticed her when they arrested him, no one noticed her walking home and no one noticed her climbing through the window. She was invisible, her heart on her sleeve and ripped to shreds. She slipped under the radar. She always stuck to the shadows these days, hiding from the world, hiding from the questions. ‘What’s wrong Maria?’ ‘Are you sleeping Maria?’ ‘Are you eating Maria?’ She was wasting away, dying of a broken heart and every night as her body was claimed by a boy who would never love her the way she loved him a little piece of her died. Soon there would be nothing and she would truly be out of sight.

The End
