Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin:
The four Hogwarts houses.
When a student is first sent to Hogwarts, school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, almost immedietly they are sorted into one of four houses by the Hogwarts Sorting Hat. Each house competes every year for the House and Quidditch Cups. Every student is awarded indiviual points for academic excellence, helpfullness etc., and these points are tallied at the end of each year and the winning house will recieve the House Cup. The Quidditch Cup is awarded to the House who wins the Grand Final Quidditch match. Whichever house the student is in determines where he/she sleeps, has classes and sits at the breakfast, lunch and dinner tables. Each Hogwarts house is like a family to members, and each house is known for a special quaility:

'You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave of heart.
Their daring, nerve and chivalry,
Set Gryffindors apart.'
'You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal.
Those paitient Hufflepuffs are true,
and not afraid of toil.'
'Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind.'
'Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends.
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.'
