A Destiny Of Her Own

October 8, 2000

A Destiny of Her Own is the tale of a Venetian courtesan in 1583. It's based on historical events, and the writings of one Veronique D'Franco (Catherine McCormack), a poetess. During this time, women in Venice had 1 of 2 roles, that of being a wife and therefore relegated to property status, or being a courtesan, educated, and freely pursued.

I found this movie fascinating as it clearly illustrates that though Veronique lives a charmed life in comparison to that of the caged wives, she is still caged, albeit a gilded cage.

She was admired and constantly wooed by all the men in venice, yet abhored by the clergy as a whore.

Of course, it being 1583, the Inquisition comes to town, and she is accused of being a witch, the ending surprised me.

I loved it, not only because of the beautiful visuals: backdrop, costumes, sets, but because of the beauty of life that it portrays.

This film was magic. I highly recommend it.
