Unbreakable - a review

December 10, 2000

Unbreakable turned out to be not what I expected at all. It's a pity that the Sixth Sense was so fantastic, and that the director did that one first.

Unbreakable is an unusual movie, full of "Sixth Sense"-like music and noir. But the director will probably be slammed for it not being as good as the Sixth Sense. If you haven't seen The Sixth Sense, it is a MUST-SEE. It's one of the best films made ever.

But back to Unbreakable. Simple story-line. Bruce Willis's character, a sad security guard with family problems, survives a fatal train wreck and walks away completely unharmed.
He is approached by Samuel L Jackson, who has a fantastical theory to propose to him, and then the after-math of dealing with that proposition.

Fantastical it certainly is, but there is a sense that this story, for all it's gritty realism, might turn out to be a fairytale after all.

Expect the unexpected, be prepared for a fantastical ending, and be aware that fantasy and reality are blurred in this film.

And I think it's done pretty well. But I can imagine some people walking out of the film saying "yuck, i didn't like that at all",

I liked it. I found it a fascinating delve into the human psyche and how we use fantasy to help take the hard-edges off reality. But then I'm a roleplayer, actor and comic-book reader.

So if you like your reality, then you may not like this film. But if, like me, reality is something you like to have a bit blurred occasionally, then you may like this film.

No promises.
