** GERMANY **

When I was 17, I found Berlin a very moving city. The bombed remains of the old Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche stand next to its modern replacement. The crosses mark where an 18 year old girl and an unknown person were shot trying to escape from the east. I went back in 1991 with Mum, and took great delight in being able to walk unhindered from west to east and back again. Some signs and small parts of the wall have been kept, and there is a fascinating museum at Checkpoint Charlie. The world must never be allowed to forget the evil that humans can do to one another, and it must never be allowed to happen again.

Trier is a very old town on the western border of Germany.

Mum and I spent 4 days in the beautiful old city of Heidelberg in August 2001.
We stayed in one of the oldest buildings in the Altstadt - the Hotel Zum Ritter (left).

The Marienkirche is the best known symbol of Munich.

The Neus Rathaus towers over Marienplatz, where the annual Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market) takes place.

The Altes Rathaus in Munich.

The Tor, one of the city gates of old Munich, was right outside the hotel where Mum and I stayed.
