Annie

Sung to the tune of "Brandy" by Looking Glass

  There’s a town in Somersetshire
Where he arrived in the sixth year
Lonely sailor visiting his brother here
Come back from the war

There’s a girl in that Kellynch town
Frederick met her doing the social round
He said, Annie, you’re the best around
She loved his brilliance and fire

The sailor said, Annie, you’re a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

(do do, do do do, do do, do do do)

Annie wears a frumpy dress
Sister Elizabeth always gets the best
Anne prays and checks the Navy list
For the man that Annie loves

He came on a summer’s day
Having fought so far away
And he made it clear that he meant to stay
With Anne he’d found his home

The sailor said Annie, you’re a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
Why did you say no? Why won’t you marry me?

Yeah, Annie used to watch his eyes while he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise, saw its raging glory
But Lady R always told the truth, she just wanted the best for Anne
And Annie does her best to understand

At night when Kellynch closes down
Anne walks through a silent house
And loves a man that’s not around
She still can hear him say

She hears him say, Annie, you’re a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
Why did you say no? Why won’t you marry me?
