Castle Thornwood will be a Living History representation of a medieval castle and its environs on 80 acres in Alaska. Our goal is to have a place that is educational and fun in which to live as well as to visit. Its final configuration will consist of:
The project will be developed in 3 phases:
While the goal for the appearance of the place will be to reflect as accurately as possible the activities, structure and technology of the 12th through the 16th centuries in Europe, the actual construction and sanitation will be modern. Construction will include experimental as well as standard techniques and materials. Also, power, water, and waste management will be a mix of standard and developing technologies. Castle Thornwood will act as a workshop for new, ecologically sensitive technologies applicable to northern urban and rural areas. Income will be derived from 3 main activities: guest accommodations and entertainment and facility rental; arts, crafts and skills education and sales; and sale of agricultural products (oil-seed flax, for example). Castle Thornwood will serve as a unique employer in the local community with a variety of job skills necessary for its successful operation. Overall, Castle Thornwood will offer a complete medieval living experience not only for overnight guests, but also for families interested in a special living situation. Also welcome will be artisans looking for a unique community in which to grow and work, or students of all ages interested in the Middle Ages. |
