Settled in 1861, Gippsland Lands Commissioner C. J. Tyers named Morwell followed by the name ¡¥Morwell Bridge¡¦. Gunai aborigines were the earliest inhabitants over there. The initial transport link to Melbourne was via the old coach road, which crossed the Morwell River at Morwell Bridge. The route was improved by the construction of railway in 1873. This accelerated the urban development of Morwell.

Maryvale, Hazelwood, Scrubby Forest, and Merton Rush were the past of Morwell. It developed from rural to urban city and became industrialised in the first half of the 20th century. At the same time, it retained the original activities, like grazing, dairying, and forestry. In the 1960¡¦s, it became the hub of the Latrobe Valley.
