AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Hong Kong Leg
2nd December 2002: Malaysian were again denied of another title as Lai Kin Ngoh was edged out by Japan's Hiroko Shimizu 217-214 in the women's final match of the AVIVA Asian Bowling Tour Hong Kong Leg while Filipino Chester King emerged the Men's Champion when he ousted his more experienced opponent, Purvis Granger 226-204.

The Finals for the women's division was probably the closest-ever match of the Hong Kong leg. Both Hiroko Shumizu and Lai Kin Ngoh were neck-and-neck going into the 7th frame with just three pins seperating them. Hiroko took the lead when she had a double in the 8th and 9th frame, then spared the 10th and struck in her bonus frame. Lai fought back striking in the 9th and 10th frame to draw level then needed another strike in the 11th frame to take the match but left pin-7 standing to edged out by 3 pins on 214-217. The win gave newcomer, Hiroko Shimizu and Japan's claim on a first-ever ABT title.

Turning to Hall’s midas touch in the alley again

Wednesday, 25th September 2002 - IT won’t be smooth-sailing for the bowlers but still Malaysia can bet on them to deliver at least a gold medal in the Busan Asian Games.  Four years ago, the highly-rated bowling team were a big letdown, winning only a bronze medal in the Games in Bangkok.

Under the charge of American Bill Hall, former international Kenny Ang, who proved his ability as a coach to lead Selangor to end a gold drought in Sukma, and chief coach Holloway Cheah, the Malaysian team look set to achieve better results.

In his two previous assignments with the national team, Hall succeeded in turning the bowlers into the masters of the lanes. At the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, Malaysia won two of the five gold medals at stake. And in the SEA Games last year, Malaysia won a record seven gold medals.

GIVING TIPS...Hall discussing a point with Lai Kin Ngoh during a training session for the Busan Asian Games
“I am with a great group of bowlers and they have put a lot of hard work since I came here,” said Hall, who arrived here two weeks ago.
“They should do much better than the last Games and I will be disappointed if they do not win any medals.”

Malaysia will be represented by 12 bowlers and they will be gunning for medals in all 10 events. The men’s team comprise Ben Heng, Azidi Ameran, Alex Liew, Daniel Lim, Gerald Samuel and Zulmazran Zulkifli. The women are Shalin Zulkifli, Sarah Yap, Lai Kin Ngoh, Wendy Chai, Lisa Kwan and Choy Poh Lai. Poh Lai was a last-minute inclusion, replacing an off-form Sharon Chai.

Based on the bowlers’ performances in international tournaments this year, the men and women have equal chances to make an impact in Busan.

Kin Ngoh The Biggest Earner Despite Low Finish At Grand Slam Finals

Tuesday, 22nd January 2002 - National bowler Wendy Chai went into the tournament as the top seed and Shalin Zulkifli led the field two days in a row. But when the dust finally settled, it was Lai Kin Ngoh who finished as the richest among the trio at the end of the four-day CGU Asian Bowling Tour Grand Slam Finals. The 26-year-old Kin Ngoh won a total of US$1,850 (RM7,030). She received US$850 (RM3,230) for finishing 11th out of the 16 women bowlers and bagged another US$1,000 (RM3,800) for scoring 289 pinfalls in the 15th game during the round-robin match at the Cathay Bowl.

Singapore Open champion Wendy finished 12th to earn US$840 (RM3,192), while Shalin, who crashed out in the first round of the knockout stage, pocketed US$1,090 for finishing fifth (RM4,142). Kin Ngoh has now sets her sights on the Malaysian Open in March. Her priorities this year also include the World Bowling Masters in Denmark in May and the Pusan Asian Games in September. Kin Ngoh is among four Malaysians to have qualified for the World Bowling Masters based on the final ranking tournament, which ended on Wednesday here. The other qualifiers are Wendy and Shalin while Ben Heng qualified in the men's division. “My first aim is to give a strong performance at the Malaysian Open,” said Kin Ngoh. “But I will be satisfied if I do well at the World Bowling Masters and Asiad.” Prior to the big events, she will compete in the National Close Championships starting next week at the Pyramid Mega Lanes.
