Well,what can I say,welcome to this new year to you from us here at the Hello Square Office ! If anyone had been noticing that I hadn't been updating this place for a while,well you'd be right,lets just say laziness got the better of me...In any case,we've got a big year in store for Hello Square,namely the debut 'proper' CD release - Function//Particles Collect.Following on from the Function album of 2003 "The Zillionaire-Retarded Speeds Of Ordinary Measured Light",this collection of extended sound pieces by Matt Nicholson,in collaboration with Function Ensemble member Milo Mylecharane,brings to the fore Matt's well crafted ability to create blissed out drone collages from treated guitars and laptop experimentation.Although both Matt and Milo both come from a background in the Australian indie rock scene,the digital enviroments and delicate melodies hint at a world outside of song structures and instrument techniques to something more freeform and in tune with the surrounding landscapes,be it Canberra or London,where most of the pieces were created.
After the aformentioned release,hopefully we will be taking a turn into vinyl with one of my favourite newly discovered artists Ben Frost aka School Of Emotional Engineering.An original request to be a part of a Sarah Blasko remix project became a joint project for a new piece that's miles ahead of Ben's work to date.As he is currently busy with other projects (as well as recently finishing off a remix for everyone's favourite female digital siren Bjork !!!),the project is still yet to take off but the plan is to have a lovely 12" of haunting guitar sonics and beautiful fuck off drumming.
Also in the works is the Male Nurse releases.The concept is simple : each CD will feature four pieces in collaboration with other musicians with another piece or edit in a solo format will split the disc.Each of the four musicians will recieve the same four guitar improvisations that I had created sometime last year to organize into a foundation for their own addition thus creating a final piece for the release.But more news on that one later......
