White dress for her, little sparkles in designs at the top...she's only sixteen....born in China...waltzy thing ....very stiff upper bost..triple lutz with hand down and put a double toe on after long pausse....and turns inbetween....around she goes....god those arms are stiff....steps to double flip ...into layback....nicely centred, not much speed.....turns in the steps....around we goin a nice spiral....back spiral....and flying camel.....robin thinks she was short on serpentine pattern of stesp....little hop in simple steps...axel that was fine....into the camel with travel to layback...change to sit to cross foot...to scratch spin and she's done. Barry comments on the tenseness of the opening....says that it was only after the 2ax that the music had any meaning for her....lutz was huge, just couldn't hold the landing...tenth off for hand, another for turns in between....loose with leg on layback....

Pale blue dress, fading into white on sleeves and on the skirt....which is more a little ruff of white but there you go....I think there's birds appliqued onto it which I'm all prepared to be wrong on....she's planning 3lz, 3toe....lovely flow in the steps to start....ave maria...lutztriple, with double toe...steps to triple flip....layback....much nice position....slide to stop...and go again into flying sit...great height.....lots of revolutions and very well centred....spiral...back spiral with foot caught....and without.....double axel...huge! big smile as she goes by.....steps....circular pattern....camel to sit to layback change sit to upright to scratch...so fast on the scratch at the end! wow, that was great! lovely speed and flow across the ice, nice soft arms, great knee bend as well....took a little second to get leg out on lutz but I'm nit picking now....same with the flip....but Robin tells us it's a techique thing for her....just a shame she skated so early...

3. Julia Lebedeva ARM

Dress is purple and blue lined thing....missing right shoulder and sleeve and we lose the feed momentarily...back now....runs for the piano thing she does....down on the triple loop which was df....very few steps going into it as well...lutz and she pops it to single and a single toe....steps along to length of the rink...not the most difficult we'll see....axel and that was fine....swingy but fine....nice layback....well centred...with variation to the side...flying camel...lots of speed and again with the well centredness and the variation (leaning to side) ...spirals...and holy extension batman! robin is as fond of the music as I am - which is to say not very.....camel to sit to butt spin to layback to change biellman to shotgun where her leg is up beside her head....see my earlier holy extension comment...and she's done. Robin tells us that the spins are terrific, and they are....shame about the jumps which it is. She doesn't move on these spins. At all. And good with the speed on them too.

marks 3.1-3.9...you can add .7 to those for the falls...3.9-4.7. 3rd place.

4. Mojca Kopac SLO

And she Tarzan, not Jane....off the shoulder shiny leopard skin number....around she goes ....lutz hand down on triple, double toe....layback...hello to the travel....pause and pose for a second...then into steps....which lead to double axel....into flying sit....good speed and travel too....spiral with bent leg....and holding leg in front of her...back spiral with leg purposely bent....steps to triple toe....very close with free leg....circular step....combo spin...camel to sit layback...change sit...to shotgun with leg bent on purpose...and she's done. And she's happy. And I note that the place is packed....Bug hug from coach and she holds her head coming off the ice , albeit with a smile on her face....triple toe was clean....we see on replays. Robin points out that she's quite untidy in the upper body and since he knows these things, I believe him and I tell you....is that Uschi with them? See Simon and Chris would have told me by now...and there's Oksana Baiul in the audience! COvering her face when they don't leave her alone, but she does it with a smile, honest!

5. Sarah Hughes USA

Navy dress...deep v at the back, and sparkley band going around it....much shorter hair since last I saw her at any rate....and just listen to the noise! And how the flags do wave...not 17 till May...and I'm not saying a thing...honest....startwith spirals...nice extension....she looks nervous though....around we go...double axel....clean as a whistle....little hoppy move....combo, lutz triple double loop...nearly fan out of room...flying camel with variation...on f/i edge, more difficult Robin tells me....steps to flip ...just hangs on but its done..layback....lovely....textbook....and to the boards for the striaght line step...she's smiling now....not very difficult says robin but beautiful...lovely spiral....holds the extension right the way around...same on back spiral....and combo spin, incl lcamel to ayback change sit to Y spin...and she's done! Robin W's hugging everyone in sight....standing O from the crowd....Robin sings the song of the cheated takeoff on the lutz, adding in a verse of the need for the mandatory deduction....we see the layback again and I say that that gets taped and sent out to every rink in the world from Albany to Zaire....Robin also says that she didn't close the circle in the step...

marks 5.1-5.6...Rus has 5.1....some deducted some didn't we think.... 5.5-5.7....she leads. two have her second.

In the warm up we see Dorothy Hamill about to take a drink and Kristi Yamaguchi, who mouths Go USA into the camera. Neither they nor Oksana seemed thrilled to be singled out....and who can blame them really, but they're good sports about it all....

6. Sasha Cohen USA

Pale blue bathing suit with a skirt, covered with sparkles....And she really looks nervous...great flow to start...also combo....lutz triple double toe....change of edge on takeoff....not as severe as Sarahs robin tells me....steps ....to triple flip and there looked a little lean but no problems on landing....flying sit....really low position....which me likes....spiral...good lord look at that extension! and again the charlotte.....my hips do ache just watching....and she cllosed the circle...and layback and that can go on to Sarahs video...this is really nice....axel and scratchy landing....I thought RObin called it light? steps with split jump....and stag leap...into camel to sit..cahnge sit...to shotgun.and she ends right on the music, pumps her fist with a yes. And that shotgun was the best I've ever seen...leg went straight up, while most people bend theirs and it drives me batty...music was my sweet and tender beast...knew I knew it.....robin would have given sarah .3 off for flutz, Sasha only one or two, because hers wasn't as bad...

7. Tatiana Malinina UZB

Lovely floaty pale blue dress for her...and can I say that she's looking great? She's lost that gaunt look that she used to have and it really suits her...she's 29... around she goes....lutz tirple and really has to check to get that toe double on....triple flip...heavy landing....camel to layback change camel to cathc foot....and stop...steps...axel ...bit loose with legs in the air....back spiral....to front....in serpentine pattern...flying camel...muchly travelled.....to upright out of that....circular step...into layback.....slight amount of travel on that...and she's done! Fists are being pumped....hands are being clapped....and she looks near tears...song from secret garden is the music.....and thank god there were no flowers or greenery on the costume...I thank you Tatiana for resisting temptation.... kiss from Roman in kiss and cry...and who can blame her really...she gives it two thumbs up...

8. Bit-Na Park KOR

Black fading to grey, and much sparkles around hte neck....and there's Robert Tebby sending her out....Schindlers LIst the music....lutz to start...leaning allover that and shes down...not enough lift either....would have been 3....aaround she goes....triple sal, steps going in...layback.....back spiral...not great extension here...spreadeagle....and not much speed either....axel crawled into it but got it....camel...lfying that was.....steps....think this is serpentine....not much difficulty though...camel to sit to layback change to variation on sit, to upright and she's done. Went into Vivaldi at the end....RObin tells us that she was short on rotation on lutz as well....long wait for axel ...

Red dress, with flamey things reaching up from the bottom....spanish theme....like Sunday night wasn't enough for you skategods? please! lutz to begin....triple double toe, with step out of toe....around she goes....2/10 off for step out...steps to a pop on the flip....flying camel with mad travel....got it back though...and hop to stop...and dance in the spot....and go around....spiral....foot grabbed in front of her...back spiral leg bent.....catch foot spiral....axel double was fine....layback.....made amounts of travel once again....straight line step....nicely done....into camel to sit layback cahnge sit to shotgun and she's done. Music was from Chocolat soundtrack, and not too tasty from her Barry says....oh, Barry and his musical quips, my sides oh how they ache....foot just stopped on the landing of the toe, there was no running edge at all....and the flip was unfortunate, just missed the toe pick....6/10 off on jumps all together Robin tells us...

Oh oh OH! That shade of reddy pink is quite literally painful...and I fear for the colour reception on my tv....as if the storm outside wans't bad enough....there are silver sparkles criss crossing the front of it and the neck....adagio by rodrigo....steps along,....huge triple flip...and builds speed for lutz...triple double toe...the height on her jumps....layback...bit of travel there....back spiral, leg bent....spiral with nice extension but ext not held....and onto other leg which does better....axel not as high but just as clean....flying cmael....good speed.....steps in a circle...nice footwork here and she makes sure to close it....camel to sit layback change camel to catch goot to biellman...and she pumps her fist when she's done! Have we ever seen her skate so well? (And she left out the butt spin which she has been known to do. And she doesn't get bonus points for that, but she really should) the height on her jumps were something else....flew into them she did....and she kept the speed on the spins as well...and what in the world are the judges going to do with this, and this is all before we get to the Group Of Death!

marks 5.0-5.5...5.2-5.5....she's third....behind the two Americans.

And ice resurface, and then the Group of Death....duhn duhn DUHN!!!! (Gusmeroli, Butyrskaya, Slutskaya, Soldatova and Kwan - what would YOU call it?)

11. Vanessa Gusmeroli FRA

Black dress...a kind of matching bra and skirt set with black netting over it. ...she takes her time to get set up, and why not? turns to judges...and away she goes...lutz triple double toe...very nice....not many stpes into triple flip...and around we go...back spiral....spiral with bent leg that was perhaps not meant ot be bent....and assorted positions beofre she stops and dances at centre ice...to layback.....travel near the end of that but not overly much....sing sing sing the music now....axel smile from her there!...camel change to sit to shotgun change to camel and biellman.....and around to circular steps....nice footwork......flying camel....travel there....with illusion out and she's happy with that! 6th in Nagano....that was great from her...she flies along the ice...very powerful skater and she motored into those triple jumps...another one who had a very long delay in the axel....layback spin Robin calls the weakest element adn I agree that the position wasn't the best....

marks.... 4.9-5.4...5.1-5.7...5th overall...and again lots of variation in marks. and ordinals. Do the maths on this one at the end!

12. Maria Butyrskaya RUS

Ah...the blue skirt and the pale see-through top with the flowery splashes of purply pink across eitehr side....and they really do only just about preserve modesty...I'm just saying....steps around the ice....flip..triple....landing not the best.....around to lutz triple really has to fight for landing, double toe....into flying camel.....no travel.....axel ...nicely done....steps....the length of the rink in a straight line...nice footwork there....into camel to layback change sit...to cathc foot camel....not so well centred there...back spiral....spiral....this being done in circle....catch foot back spiral....layback spin....and she's done. And she don't look that happy ... and the applause is muted, I think in deference to the two leaders and Michelle....really had to fight for the landings of the two triples.... late getting free leg around from lutz....flip was landed on flat of blade Robin tells us....

marks 5.0-5.7...holy heck...5.5-5.8...3rd...overall....1st to 6th ordinals....I'm so glad I'm not calculating this....and it's a shame OBO is in, because otherwise we'd have mad fun with the ordinals!

13. Irina Slutskaya RUS

Pale blue dress, much of the middle on front and back with the flesh coloured material and loads of sequins and sparkles to preserve modesty...and they do so much better than Maria's....triple lutz double loop to start....that was lovely...steps around...into double axel out of nowhere....turns in the steps.....flip triple and that was fine.....layback...the speed and her skate touches her head...and the centreing and hte speed! footwork sequence is lovely...every edge in both direction....flying camel.....she didn't move....back spiral is fantatic...spiral isn't too bad either! and back spiral on other foot.....into camel to sit to layback to biellman change camel to biellman....and cross foot...and she's done. She crosses herself when seh's done and taht should be good enough says Robin (although, say I, with the variation on teh judges marks thus far, I wouldn't bet the farm on it) Robin comments on the speed...and even I could see that and it doesn't usually translate! ...you could really see that she was flying.....she seemed to wince landing the flip, don't know why....her spins are unreal....her slomos are as fast as some others' real time !

Crimson on top, fading in zigzags to pink lower down........she's worn that dress beofre. Many times in fact. little turns to start....moving in circle....and now she goes around for the lutz and she double sit and no combo...that's huge....steps into flip triple and she just holds onto it...flyingf camel with travel....around we go....axel and a forwards landing on that, right over toe rake...don't get me startedon the first spiral position....nice low backspiral...almost charlotte but without the touching of the boot.....layback spin...not a great position either....circular step.....which she just about finished....camel to sit laybacj change camel to catch foot camel...looked like biellman but not quite... and she's done. And with skates like the ones that we've seen tonight, this is going to be down there...smiles coming off, if she'd just done the toe loop on the lutz...but they have to hammer her for lack of combo...she was leanign on that double axel, last quarter turn landed on the ice...

15. Michelle Kwan USA

Purple bathing suit dress, with goldy spangles. And would you listen to the noise....and here we go....I'm nervous. Big smile from her....runs to start as I remember Rachmaninov.....quite a feat of typing there.....combo to start...lutz triple double toe....she looks taller...is she taller....axel nice held landing out....layback.....nice position......and well centred......music changes....she does her little runny thign.....and aroudn in steps....circular steps.....not as difficult say Robin as Irinas....steps to fdlip ...leaning but landed! flyinf sit...kept the foot off.......and you can see her counting.....big smile as she goes to change edge spiral....and do I ever love this move....back spiral is fab...and Y spiral...camel to sit to Y spin change sit to Y.....and that's that! good girl good girl good girl! Standing O, we see Karen in the stands, Dad at the boards....barry says tech not as good as more than one....Robin has her behind Slute and Cohen in the jumps....there is a change of edge on the lutz...and he also bemoans her lack of speed....artistically I prefer this one, but I see his point about the technical....overall, I'd have Slute first maybe, her second...one of her jumps the flip was under rotated he notes..... but it's a close one. I 'd have Kwan ahead on second mark....judges could go either way....

marks .. 5.6-5.9...and the 5.6 is from us judge...barry calls the nine total nonsense....straight 5.9s for presentation. And she leads. Okidoke then. rus blr fin can have hersecond. 5/4 split. barry is fuming over hte technical marks....he calls them hard to udnerstand and bordering on the ridiculous....he's really pissed, it's quite amusing really....is this what it's like reading me?

16. Elina Kettunen FIN

White dress with the slightest tinge of bluey grey...sparkles on teh bodice...quite nice....and half the skirt is blue pale I realise now....very leggy skater she is.... lutz and she doubles it and lands it short...no combo either....actually lutz was between a 2 and 3.....doubles the loop...flying camel......she doesn't move from the spot but she's slow with it.....around for the axel...and seh gets that....layback....not terrible but not great....steps in a straight line.... back spiral....cathc foot spiral never gets going....camel to sit to biellman change foot to catch foot camel with almost biellman look to it....and she's not going to be happy with taht at all at all....she did a double lutz and had to fall out of it....

marks 4.1-4.5 .... 4.8-5.1...she's 11th.

Black top, white skirt with black polka dots and little white gloves...and this is me, not waving the flag....nope, not me. I am Zippy mouth girl. There's Jamie in the crowd....she gets as big a roar as Michelle did! Jamie now, not Jen. String of pearls around the neck....she mimes unhappiness there....steps along the ice.....know the musci....lutz triple double toe!....little shake of shoulders...and around , builds speed...loses it again...triple flip a little forwards but there...and clean.....back spiral....and she looks right at the judges doing it.....more spirals ensue....and flying sit was great. nice and high and well centred...layback....and look at that for a postiion......keep thinking jen, come on now.....axel and that was clean....I nearly couldn't look! steps....serpentine pattern.....nice footwork.....blows kiss..camel to sit to labyack...change sit to cross foot and she's done! yes! oh yes! there's Kurt! yay jen! and there's Jamie and David behind her....oh well done her! you see, I keep my mouth shut and seh stays on her feet! and no two foot landings even more important! she's thrilled and i'm thrilled for her....doug and michelle beside her....

marks 4.8-5.4....4.8 from fin and only one in 4s.... go up.... 5.0-5..6....she's 8th. blows kisses from kiss and cry! so cute!

Blue pale dress...sparkley flowers around the top...lutz to start...and she just hangs on and does double toe...could've been touch down but not sure....around she goes.....turns to double foot 3flip...that I"m sure of...layback....axel ...no speed going into it, but it was fine...flying camel....better speed on that , and she didn't move form the spot as far as I could tell....back spiral....doesn't look too confident on that....and another ,not held so well....steps ...in circle.....camel to sit layback change camel to sit to shot gun....and upright...and she's done. RObin calls combo spin her best element....nice smile from her coming off....lutz yes, free foot was down...we see combo spin again and it was good....

Yikes! We have a front runner for the Natalia Bestemianova Services to Fashion Award....purple on one side, orange on the other.....one sleeve is purple, one is non existant but sports a nice long orange glove insread....purple sequins on orange side, silver on ppurple side.....a pruple velvet dog collar around her neck....we have a winner folks! lutz and she's down on that....triple it would have been....down the ice to the toe loop which is a clean triple toe loop....and layback spin is very fast and well centred.....she claps hands going trhough....camel to sit layback cahnge sit to shotgun...really fast combo spin but not holding positions for very long....spiral steps.....no speed here she's crawling around the ice and again, she's not holding the positions......axel now...and that was fine but not a lot of running edge...flying camel....starts to travel at the end.....circular step...nice footwork but more an oval than a circle....and seh's done. A rueful smile on her way off...not enough height on the lutz....Robin comments on the fact that her blades are gold, which I did notice because it's rather noticable....

Orangey gold on right side, pale strip of gold, grey on other side. Not a lot of back to the dress....is being helped by Midori Ito Barry tells us...also that she's 19...around she goes....lutz and hop out....and no combo....over rotated landing of lutz....steps to triple flip and that was claen......layback with serious travel on it....spirals....nice back sprial there....forward ones aren't anything to write home about....flyingcamel.....steps in a straight line....axel nice and high....into camel to sit with variation cahnge sit...to camel with leg up...and cross foot spin to finish. nice applause from the crowd...she kind of skidded coming out when she had to put on the hop, otherwise she might have got the double on......she was doing 3ax in practice and landed one.....barry brings up the story of midori jumping out of the rink...this by way of talking about how powerful this girl is..

Cerise Pink skirt and dress with black patterns and black netting on the shoulders and sleeves to stop it being shoulderless and sleeveless....Suits her actually....spanish themey thing....you'dknow to look at her.....lutz double with a turn, and double toe loop;....steps t o triple loop...long lead up I would have said....layback...leg is very high and not much arch to her back....straight line step....axel ...scratchy landing.....cmael to sit to chaange to camel sit to upright....ok, lost positions there, me not her....it's threein the morning and I'm weaving....great extension on catch foot spiral...and again on back spiral....and on the other foot not as good in back but not bad either...flying camel.....travels a little......and she's done behind the music....ballad of two strangers was the music....we see MIchelle backstage and she waves, and the crowd roar.... loop was fine...as was axel..camel spin to sit to cathc foot, like a biellman but not.....change to sit to upright is the combo spin....glad they showed that again!

marks ... 3.9-4.1...a few whistles from the crowd... 3.9 then 4.3-4.8...she's 18th with 6 to go...right on borderline, but she should be safe! Which is why she's happy!

Ice resurface, so I go for a little walk around the upstiars to try to wake myself up!

22. Viktoria Volchkova RUS

Black dress for her, with sparkles and red trim...no sleeves, hlater neck, black long gloves with sparkles as well....her notes say that she was born in Leningrad and lives in St Petersburg....Barry finds this amusing ...as do I.....Moonlight Sonata.....pop version coming up....good cause I'm seeing G&G out there....lutz huge and turn out of it...double toe....robin calls the double three totally unnecessary... and just double flip...flying camel....oh dear vicky.....psiral.....and you can see it in her face...spirals are nice....point your toe girl you konw you can.....ina bauer or a cousin of one...and slighty scratchy and forwards on axel...mucho travel on layback....circular step.....camel to layback to cahnge sit to shotgun and she's done. And she certainly is. Barry reckons there will be no concern among the top six...had she done triple flip, it would only have been .1 deduction...for the double three turn...just lost her head there... she gets such great height on her jumps...

Blue pale dress for her...and pale blue seems to be the order of the day really...was there a sale on the material? Criss cross straps at the back...and while there's nothing wrong with the dress per se, it is in no way flattering on her...could benefit with the being taken in a little.....it's like a sack on her...steps into triple sal...not the best but she held it says Robin.....triple toe??? hand down double toe...free foot oalso down... combo spin....quite inelegant on some of hte positions.....to the boards goes she.....stiraght line steps.....not much in the way of difficulty...spirals....axel....that was fine...camel flying.....with harding variation...to layback.......travel on the end of that....and she's finished. she has flesh coloured gloves on her hand...and I must ask why? lucky on the sal....two footed takeoff? camel to sit layback change sit to shotgun is the combo....

And she don't look happy as the announcer tries to get the crowd a-going....lutz long time in setting up and just snatched at it....flip leaning all the time, and looked like she just slipped on the take off ....5/10 ded for the jumps.....she gets whippy speed on the layback spins but she can't control it, travels like mad....

Pale peachy pink bathing suit dress with skirt....and I'm torn because I like her but Sylvia's in 10th! piano starts us....there are sparkles on teh dress did I say? lutz triple double toe...was the free foot down on the lutz.....flip....steps from....and she gets it....has been giving her problems in practice all week....posing on the ice....into layback.....nice position...spiral....catch foot back spiral....ordinary back spiral...axel she crawled into it and it was tiny...flying sit did free foot touch down? circular step wit hteh arms going oto the booms....camel to sit to variation on sit chagne camel to catch foot...and shes done...and happy. robin says no obvious deductions, so I guess the answer to my two touchdown questions would be no....
