Olympics 2002

This review is going to be a little different...starts with the earlier
skaters, the final ones in group two, which I didn't see live. Then it's
going to go to the
two-in-the-morning-don't-we-love-BBC-who-needs-sleep-anyway part of the
review!

The eight in the morning highlights.

Langlois and Archetto CAN
Nice white dress for her, black tshirt and trousers for him...I will wait
for you. michel legrand is the music....lifty thing to get them going, then
to spiral...and around the ice we happily go...throw 3sal....into s/s 2ax
and that was clean....Chris is in raptures, I await the collapse...split
triple twist.....s/s triple toes, clean as you like, into doubletoes witha
little falter from her....lift....goes to no hands....nice change of
position....she holds him by the waist and slides down...nice slidy moves in
the slow section....spirals...throw trriple toe and she put a hand down and
that was odd...star lift....upside down dismount...s/s triple sals and she's
down....he spins her under his arm....lift where she's up backways and a
flip out...into pairs spin....music changes....and straight line step...not
the most difficult that we'll ever see....into another pairs spin....s/s
flying camel....to sit...hear him call the change and it still doens't
change well either time....he drags her along hte ice and into a death
spiral....and finish with him standing there and her kneeling at his back,
looking up at him....a program of two halves says Simon....fell apart after
one mistake...Chris says it took her too long to get over the mistake on the
throw triple toe....but what a start....throw triple toe, she had to put a
hand down, couldn't hold it...same on the triple sal...nice big hug for her
at the end.
marks 5.0-5.2...5,1-5.2 (8) in first place now.

Lariviere and Faustino CAN
Pale lilacy grey dress for her, black trousers, white shirt and black
waistcoat for him....romeo and juliet.....s/s triple toes....and made
it...into double toes...splti triple twist...heavy landing, she not quite
around, he did well to catch her....2ax where seh had to step out and double
foot.....lift...and he got her straight up there!...diagonal steps....throw
triple loop and she just kept the hand off...good solid landing Chris calls
it....pairs spins....nicely centred....lift, starllift...nice changes of
position in that....throw triple sal and that was terrific...they've got a
lovely flow along the ice...fdlying camels to sit, loss of unison in the
camels and through the change but they get it back....spirals...around we
go....lift where shes on his knee first then to press to star and down
sliding along his back and out under his legs...daring but inelegant Simon
calls it, I thought it was cool me....around to the b/o d/s.....and that's
that. They must be thrilledsays Simon, and she gets a big huge...Canadian
flags wave...Simon says that it was a little slow but a lot to admire, Chris
agrees that they were holding back and mentions the thinness of the air in
Salt Lake City....lands forward on 2ax she did and had to turn out of
it....held the throw jumps well...
marks 4.8-5.2...13th going into free....5.0-5.3...they lead at the moment.

And now we go to the two-in-the-morning-live section.

So, it's two in the morning. I've been in bed since ten. And I set one
alarm clock to wake me at two so that I can see the final three groups. And
set a second one for eight so that all I have to do at half four this
morning is fall into my bed and try to get back to sleep. Then get up and
teach for the day. Although at least it's only a half day, this being
Pancake Tuesday and thus a half-day for us. No, I"m not making that up, we
get a half day to make the pancakes. And no, I'm not going to think about
that, because my body is telling me that having woken up post sleep, it's
looking for breakfast, and I'm saying not at seven minutes past two in the
morning, no!

Forgive any typos as the combo of sleep deprivation and cold.

Barry Davies and Robin Cousins in the box...don't we love the Beeb for live
coverage??

Kautz and Jeschke GER
Browny wine dress for her, flowers on the chest....crisscross straps at the
back...he's in white short that's quite illfitting and black
trousers...split triple twist with a little heavy landing to start...Robin
calls it solid....s/s triple toes are ok, she had to save hers a little,
deep landing...sh smiles at the landing....throw triple loop double footed
onthe landing....lift goes to one hand and keeps the same amount of speed
all the way through....skate around a little, int othe axels and down she
goes, timing off on s/s double loops....pairs spins as Robin tells us to
stay ahead of the Canss they need to step this up...I take it the Cans were
amazing hten.....throw triple toe, not clean landing...he loses footing on
exit of death spiral...lift from a press start...into a dodgy looking star
lift on which he looses his footing and they both go down...she was already
on the way luckily and there was a distinct lack of speed which saved it
from being truly nasty....lift where she's lying back in his arms and that
was much better....and an appreciative clap from the
crowd....spirals.....she goes under his leg in one of them....camels
spins...nice timing....really nice timing....perfect unison ....f/i
d/s...which is lovely position wise from her....and they're done. She tries
to kiss the back of his shoulder, but he just moves a little too fast for
her....Barry tells us that they didn't match the Canadian pairs...and I
curse my decision to get some sleep, and look forward to taping the pairs
from Eurosport later on this morning in the hopes that I might see them, in
which case this review will make just no sense, but there you go...we see a
replay of the fall on the lift, and Robin points out that he made sure she
was down before he let her go...she just got too far back in the circle to
stay up...coould've been nasty, thank God for lack of speed..

Scott and Dulebohn USA
Lilac dress for her and she was fallingall over the place on the
warmup....and popping her jumps. He's in white shirt with black waistcaot
and trousers....huge crowd reaction for them, and I'm suddenly very afriad
for her....11th after short....slow to start....open with s/s triple
toes....here we go....good girl! goosd girl! she got hers...I have a slight
suspicion he may have doubled because that leg looked high, but I could be
wrong...little tight on landing of split 3twist...she was very close to
him....around they go...and up into a lift....great speed and good footwork
from him....nice smiles as they go around...throw....triple toeand she's
down...not enough height on that for her to get around....lift where shes
lygin back then goes into a chair then a standing position and he lowers her
down....s/s spoins....nice postiion change to camel with leg up in the
air...and no loss of synch....spiral....including mini spread from him which
I like...you know me and my spreadeahglesa nd then he does it again just to
amke this worth staying up for....throw 3sal and she's down again....Robin
bemoans the lack of help he gives her on takeoff....he singles the 2ax, she
steps out of hers, and the double toes<?> that follow are clean but not in
unision...pairs spin....steps....as Robin calls this
disjointed...lift...helicopter lift....b/o d/s....nice arch of the back from
her...and nice speed and that's the end of that! Shots of the stars and
stripes waving as they take their bows and I marvel once more at how far
away the spectators are from the ice....and I was right, he did double his
toe....we get to see the s/s spins again....wonderous they were....Robin
points out that in both throws she's leanign away from him before he can
push her in the air, which is their problem he says...and we get a replay of
the death spiral just for me...they smile and wave in K&C....
marks 4.6-5.0...Barry tells us not as good as
Can...goshdarnitall....4.9-5.3...and they're second. So they split the
Cans....but they're 3rd onthe free. 2nd overall. Okidoke then.

Pang and Tong CHN
Lilac dress for her, no sleeves, but then the sleeves are joined on as
gloves without hands....lilac shirt for him, grey trousers. This should wake
me up. And htat's not a slight onthe costumes. Really. Although why they
both have scarfy things around their necks, an ascot like thing for her, a
really gippy looking bow tie undone for him, I don't know...Rachmaninov
Piano Conceto no 2...ss 2ax to triple toes which she steps out off badly and
he not quite as bad on the landing but not quite clean either....huge split
triple twist....great catch as well...throw 3sal...iffy on landing, had to
check hard for it.....lift and he gets her right up there....s/s
camels....she seems to make the change a half rev beforehim....piary spins
type things on centre ice....f/i d/s...really low....sprials including a
lovely spreadeagles where they're both in inside eagles, her at his
back...love that...s/s 2ax....much better....more relaxed into takeoff says
Robin..throw 3loop and that was a corker...theyr'e flying
now....lift....where she's standing stragiht up in the air...and pairs
spins...that middle section was lovely....speedy up now for the straight
line step...not too tricky....ok on the unision though.....ss/s double toes
and they're quite far apart and not great on the timing of....lift....where
its starts as a star and then she closes her legs...lifty and swingy things
to finish and their closing pose is like Jamie and Davids from the short but
without the fall....and the crowd applaud. As I say, good routine, albeit
flawed, but I've got to say, the middle piece, the slow section was really
nicely done nad choreogprahed....his triple toe was landed high over the toe
rake which is what was wrong with it....he also took off a little before
her....height and length on throws was good...huge potential Robin says they
have...
marks 5.2-5.5...best so far and my eyes open wide, which can only be good at
2.34 in the morning...5.1-5.4..and they lead. Although with a few seconds
which we can't see but I trust Barry.


Zhang and Zhang CHN
Pretty brown dress for her...lattice laces on the back and on the
front...she's got some nice dresses, I''m just saying. Brown shiny top and
black trousers for him. Now these were great in the short. Young, but
grreat. 9th place after the short. f/i d/s to start....split triple twist
and that was almost a lateral....s/s triple toes...she looked to take off
just before him....but landed together....throw triple sal....steps....as I
try to place the music...if I hum it willl you tell me....nicely interpreted
steps....lift...with flip over and out....s/s triple sals and she singles
hers.....s/s camels of the flying variety...and into sits and it looks like
they lost unison badly on that....spiral sequence which has nothing to do
with the music....throw triple loop and she's down hard....steps
again...spirasls....and she was oscillating on the frorward one
badly....lift straight up and down, no one hand, no change of position...b/o
d/s...where she wasn't low to the ice at all....into pairs spins...very
slow...I had to say I liked them didn't I? s/s 2ax she did single, both
scrambled 2flips....lift star lift...change of position doesn't go anywehre
but down....and they finish...and they don't hold their pose and seh hugs
him and he pats her back....music was Coppelias Ballet Suite....thank you
Barry...and she looks so sad! first throw was fine...second one....he threw
her so hard that he went up in the air and she lost her balance....as Robin
tells us that they were doing these in warm up with their eyes closed. the
split twist was amazing....
marks 5.1-5.2 (4 of 5.2) 4.7-5.1...about what you'd expect...3rd place
overall....

and we see the next group on for warm up.

Ina and Zimmerman USA
Not a good draw for them I would have said...aquamarine is the
colour...black trousers with the blouse for him....sparkles on her dress,
and she looks tense...although who wouldn't in this position...we get the
Kyoko Ina family genealogy and partner history ...and they're out to centre
ice and ready to start...standing apart from one another, hes goes to
her....I'm getting nervous already this isn't good....s/s triple toes....and
they're clean....s/s double axels and listen to this crowd!...round we go
for the split...and a heavy landing I think....crowd roar anyway...s/s 2ax
she puts hand down and into double toes....he lungest and kneels in front of
her...steps around the diagonal of the rink....and lift of the press
variety...change of position to star on the side and beaming grin from her
as she goes down...besti sqaurts ...and she had to wrk hard onthe throw
3loop but got it....spread eagle from him as she slides the length of
him....and her hand looked to go to a very personal place for a second
there...s/s spins...quite far apart...loss of synch on the change....candle
lift...where she goes up to himwith him in s/e, and that was unreal! she
went all around the place on that....I want tos ee again...throw 3sal and
she nailed it! that was great and she's veaming...f/i d/s....and lord knows,
I dont' like this team but that lift might conver me...s/s steps...keep
thinking keep thinking....lift...star lift....and hop down....little lift
where she's on his hip...and piars spin and look at that smile from
her....natalia death spin...and theyre both smiling...and they do the thing
with him in besti and her standing on him and thats that and he picks her up
and hugs her and is that a tear in myeye oh yes it is! that was just just
wonderful....and he whoops at centre ice....arms are pumping and waving ,
the crowd is standing, I'm bawling...I'm so glad I got up for this! 2.56 in
the morning and I'm wide awake and smiling! see replay of hand down....
marks 5.4-5.7...and they clap....thye're not even sittign! too much energy!
5,6-5.8. and she's jumping up and down! as much jumping in the k&c as there
was in the program! a row of ones...big surprise there!


Petrova and Tikhonov RUS
And the blakc and white ziggy zaggys - and how much do you hate having to
follow that? I'm still wiping my eyes...and they're in 6th, just behind
I&Z...s/s double axels to start....into triple toes...and that was
perfect....triple toes again at the other end....steps around we go....split
triple twist....nice exntesion from her on the landing....throw 3sal...long
set up and taht was clean...lift from back entrey...she's in chair position
with legs bent and they do the flip out...another thing where she goes over
his back...pairs spins....she stops and runs her handdown his face...RObin
calls this clinical...if I could think of big words at this hour, so would
I....slow section here...throw triple toe, not the best landing, not hte
length of other pairs either....star lift...where he foes to spreadeagle,
her on the side...very slow....straight line step....s/s
spins..camel...great unison...that was something else...and around we
go...is it over yet...lift where he's holding her by the hip and a lfip
out...f/i d/s....and they finish, slightly ahead of the music, him on knees
arms wrapped around her waist...both smile. Elements were cleanly done.
Speed was lacking. And didn't have the passion, the emotion, the general
overall oomph of the Americans...RObin tells us there is no spontanaeity
there...sing it brother! no spark no passion he continues, and why should I
think when he does it for me? That nearly put me back to sleep that did...he
says judges must look past that...
marks 5.4-5.7...5.4-5.6...they're in second, and they shrug and smile. And
I can't argue. At all. Russia has them first. Hello! Excuse me!

Berankova and Dlabola CZE
She's in lilac (and I must ask, what is up with all the lilac this year? Was
there a sale on the dye? Do you get bonus points for wearing it? I'm just
sayin') with flamey leavy patterns on it...not much of a back to it...he's
in navy blue crushed velvet with lilac blue collar and cuffs. Who'd'a thunk
that they'd'a been in 7th place here? Piano starts us off...holy extension
batman, how does she do that with her leg! s/s double axels...s/s triple
toes and down he goes...hand and foot...and she loses footing on
steps....split triple twist....throw 3sal and landing leg was low but I
think it stayed off...fi d/s...Robin says there was a touchdown on the
throw, I still say no weight transfer...she does her spinny thing as he
skates around her...lift...and that's lovely...and now I remember that this
is the day when you love me...ah eltsova and bushkov we hardly knew
ye....throw triple toe much better.....lift with a flip out...along the
diagonal into s/s 2toe and 2 toes...s/s spins sit to upright change
sit....great timing adn you could see him keeping an eye on her...really
close togtether too..turns and lifts nad hops from her...hoppy lifts
even...star llift...and loook at the position! great footwork from him and
her extnesion is an eye opener...and I hate this music....b/i d/s...piars
spin....incl one with her in biellman...and they're done with two smiles on
their faces. see the sit down from hi magain.....toe did touch on the sal,
but I still say it was just as she was pushing through....her legs were at
right angles in that lift...wow...I am agog....they wave the flags in kiss
and cry....
marks 5.2-5.4...5.3-5.5...gets a wow from him...third at the moment which is
what you'd expect. 4ths from france and russia.


Zagorska and Siudek POL
And there's that cream dress that I loved so much from Euros...he's in cream
shirt and brown unitard....he carried the flag in opening ceremonies....can
I mention again that I love love love her dress? It's just fabulous....so
elegant and simple...we get the proposal story from Barry....start off with
somersault from her over his arms....s/s triple toes...and scrappy on that,
Robin says she doubled hers....she singles the axel, does the double
toe....round we got fro the split...and that was nice...one of the best so
far actually as far as landings go for me....throw 2ax is huge...and
clean...move where he's in back s/e, she' got the leg out in front of
him...deaht spiral....steps...along the diagonal, a little slow, but in
unison...lift from unside down postion and myriad changes of position...and
other one ,,,and with the meno sand flippy dismount....glide with her
leaning back...and another with her in his arms...Robin bemoans the
scrappiness of hte routine asI admire the pairs spins....she skates around
him...throw 3sal and she was leanign in the air and got the landing how I
don't konw....lift where he goes into s/e and it never goes to one hand for
shaky it did look....more lifts and turns with her upside down in his
arms...music stops and they go again tinto s/s spins...do you need to start
me on his sit spoin position? No, I thought not...lift where he lifts her up
backways and goes to star position ...way better....death spira., f/i that
starts with her in splits, one foot on his boot...and that's that. He rubs
her shoulder....nice shot of the Poles in the stadium though...not their
better performance....she did three turns on the toe, but it was leaning and
scrappy....Robin tells us that in the lifts their legs (hers?) are bent,
feet aren't pointed and it all looks rushed,,,lacks finesse and class...got
to agree, it did not look as polished as some that we've seen..
marks 5.4-5.6...thye're going to move up on those...5.3-5.6..and they do
move ahead of B&D which surprises Barry. And me. And they had seconds
there...he leans over as she's fixing her skate and kisses her back...aaaw..

Ice resurface. And we get the highlights of the day thus far. Biathlon. Woo.
And they cancelled the downhill? Jeanine pouts as we see the fluff piece on
Picabo for the gazillionth time...and again, the great Steve Rider (BBC
Grandstand Anchor) search for alcohol...and if they show food, I'm going to
have to protest, because that's just not fair....

This nausea is either tiredness or hunger or nerves....oh god....we get to
relive the short from Saturday night....oh god...B&S are what we're seeing
now....


oh no...Anton ran into Jamie...no, she into him...and she went down.., so
did he...she looks shaken...don't curse, don't swear....

Totmianina and Marinin RUS
West Side Story...oh take me now..please....the dark pastel tops...not the
best for me I must say...she stands, he kneels away from her...s/s triple
sals.and she lands aheadof him...great speed from the off....splittriple
twist..heavy on the landing....steps...throw 3loop..cleanly done...jumps and
turns as when you're a jet plays....s/s triple toes and both almost put a
heand down and he did...and s/s double toes after that....lift... where take
off was with her in front of him...chairy type postion, changingof legs
there too...and down she goes...maria is the music and we got around to
another lift....one handed, her in stag position....steps around...and throw
3sal and that was a beauty...fi d/s ...arch your back woman! ... s/s
cmaels, flying....to upright leg position....slight variation in two
positions....lift , star lift...and over and down...and straight line
steps....look to have lost a little of their speed....spirals steps....dance
on centre ice....pairs spins....her in half biellman in one...and another to
finish behind the music. Once agian, steady performance, well skated, but
not with the oomph of the Americans, and the crowd are being predictably
quiet over it, probably out of deference to Kyoko and John. Or maybe they're
like me and they're just too nervous to even think about things like
this....tentative Robin calls it and less than when they won in
Lausanne...both were leanign on the toes and both put hand down...perfectly
in synch though, do they get marks for that???? oh god take me now....
marks ....5.5-5.8...rus has the only 5.8...only one 5.7
...ahema...5.4-5.7...they're in first. Whatever. 5 to 4, Can has 4th, 3
2nds.

Bereshnaia and Sikharulidze RUS
Red dress for her...bluey shirt from back, darker navy on front...navy
trousers...very deep v on the shirt....oh god....oh god....oh well, at least
I'm awake....oh god...I'm shaking but I'm awake...classical....Thais....big
old cut out on her back....s/s triple toes....and they're clean....s/s 2ax
and he bobbles his...two feet dwon and turns around...got the second part of
the combo out...oh god...huge split triple twist with delay...breathe
Jeanine.....spiral thing where she's in s/e him in spiral....throw 3sal and
she was over the toe on the landing...clean, but tight....spirals....f/i
d/s...and he changes his position...she cahnges hers and does one with her
hand holding her frree foot in front of her...steps aroudn we go....lifty
hops....lift one hand,easy as you like....glidy move....spirals...throw
3loop and late getting the free leg back. over-rotated the landing but held
it...backways lift...with a somersault out....and slide to cerntre ice...s/s
spins...camels..flying to sit...graet timing as she does catch foot and he
skates around to get her for pairs spins....skate around again..upside dwon
entrey lift....and down they go...I think that was meant to look like
that...her leaning back in s/e again him in spiral...and they end with her
leanign back in his arms. oh god. oh god. Rapturous applause says
Barry...not quite the perfection that they were looking for but even so
wonderful to watch he says...and i'm telling you hwat he says because I'm
stillstuck on ohgodohgodohgodohgod.....very competent, lovely flow...I would
be happy with that winning I must say....unless Jamie and David do
better....Robin harps on the tightness of their movements....can see it on
landing of both throws...they were clean and dafe but not the prettiest...

Sale and Pelletier CAN
Are these Love Story costumes? Yes! Oh please god... I apologise already for
anything I say, or for my jinx taking effect....oh god....around we
go...triple toes to start yes! perfect! he takes her hand...lift....one
handed, graet speed and flip rotate out...she smiles at him and who wouldn't
really....splt 3rwist...and that was perfect....throw 3sal!!! can't scream,
house asleep....four in the morning....s/s double axel...yes! 2toes....and
the crows are roaring and look at her smile! lookat it!....oh god keeping
thinking...lifft changes of postiion....great .....steps are pefect
unison....nice and playful love the facial expressions...lift and spin and
spin ...s/s flying sits perfect unision and I'm shjaking so hard I can't
type...pins and needles here people!@ and stop...stare at one another....d/s
f/i...from their unusual back entry....and stop and she does little
extension thing....sptes....throw...pelase..loopyes!!! they must have
it...spirals.....oh the emotion....lift....where shes lying on her
stomach...and out of that....b/i d/s....and piars spins....and thats
that!....and he kneels and kissed the ice (oh to be that ice....) and then
whoops....and so does she
and oh my god there can be no doubt there can be no doubt and I dont' care
that I jinx everyone let me say it again there can be no doubt. there can be
no doubt. i'm still shaking I have pins and needles and I fully expect
sixes...flawless. simply perfect. so worth staying up for. so worth it.! ok
breathe...and you could just see her go oh my od...i'm going to faint...and
thats me not her and the crowd chant....six...you know how i feel

first...no way. no way. 5 to 4. that's a disgrace.

Shen and Zhao CHN
Black for him...red for her....eerie atmosphere says Barry....lifty hop to
him to start...and if my enthusiasm has waned, you can understand right? I'm
pissed off tight now...throw no! she has the quad sal and lost it on the
landing! oh god so lose! s/s 2ax....to s/s triple toes and he has to put a
turn on his...lift....and that didn't look right at all...and atound for a
huge split triple twist...s/s spread ragles...double axels out of
synch....b/i d/s....pairs spins....sequencing the elements here....nicely
done....steps around....throw triple loop perfect...and huge....him in s/e
her with her leg on his shoulder...s/s camel....and that was dire going inot
the sit... far apart and synch was woeful... as were the spins
really....lift...not best position....nessum dorma is the
music....lift.....crwod liked it...he dioes butterfly at the end....she
skates around him and they're done. Barry says he'll be amazed if that's a
gold or silver perfromance...I say if that's silver, I will fly to America
under the power of my ire and kick some ass.....she had the quad. she had
the quad and lost teh landing. she though she had it from the look on her
face, it just slid out....
marks 5.7-5.8(2) ....5.7-5.8 (3)...and they're in third. across the board in
fact.

Barry calls the decision difficult to understand. I have several other words
fro it, most of which are not suitable for this environment. Let me however
put it in a way so that there is no misunderstanding - Jamie and David were
robbed. Robin agrees with me. and when I tape Eurosport later on this
morning, I would be interested in saying what Chris and NIcky would say...
Barry looks at pro-bloc judging, saying that it went along east/west lines
except for Fra having the Rus first...he's casting aspersions...That was a
disgrace. Anton had the mistake on the axel, the throws weren't as secure as
jamie and david's who were simply flawless. And thye didn't have the passion
of Jamie and David either. I say again, disgraceful. Criminal even.

Medals...we can see them getting ready backstage...I'm still shaking my
head...there's Elvis! giving Jamie a big hug....aww....and she's in tears as
she stadns with David now...he's putting on the brave face....as thye listen
to the Olympic anthem...this is gonna be fun....they get big hugs from the
Chinese...who are now being announced....nice applause for them...this next
one should be interesting I would say....and here's Jamie and David...and
listen to this! and there's a standing O! which I join from my computer so
excuse the typing....and the gold...applause but I would say more muted,
some still standing.....medals presented in reverse order...I am so wide
awake right now it's just not funny....and tumultous applause as they get
the silvers....and Jamie's gone aagain....oh bless her, I just want to hug
her...and here comes the anthem.

And on that point guys and gals, it is time for me to retire to my leaba and
try to get some sleep so that I can go in and teach the kiddies tomorrow...I
see much writing in their future, and that, at least, I cannot jinx.

Thanks to the miracle of video and Eurosport repeats, I can confirm that
Simon and Chris were just as stunned as I was. Chris didn't actually say
much about it at all...Chris Howarth, speechless, how often does that happen
when Diana Poth's not on the ice? Pretty much says it all. He did however
