Objective:

To work in a challenging research environment which offers professional development and growth potential and to further build up my professional experience for the advancement of my career.

Experience:

Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, December 1997

Position: Lecturer

Oct 1997 July 1999: Conducted lectures and prepared question papers on Electronic Measurements to Third Year Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering students. Conducted Laboratory Classes on Analog Electronics for Third Year Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering students.

Engaged in research activities with the collaboration of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and Road Development and Construction Company, Sri Lanka to develop a coordinated traffic control system for Sri Lanka. This system was implemented in Colombo city and suburbs. Major work was to link traffic signal controllers in isolated intersections using voice grade telephone links, to develop methodologies to control and monitor the system from a remote control and monitoring center and to synchronize based on time of day.

My contribution to the above research was:

  • Developing the communication interface of the UNIROAD traffic controller developed by the University of Moratuwa.
  • Developing the system firmware of the system:
    • To handle data communication functions
    • To decode and to execute the control and monitoring instructions
    • For time based synchronization
    • For error detecting and logging
  • Formulating and implementing the protocol for the communication with and control of the traffic signal controllers in multi-processor architectures.
  • To develop PC based control and monitoring software for the system
The above research was a part of my Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree.

July 1999 April 2000: Continued the above research on full time basis. In addition to the activities mentioned above, for the completion of my thesis, I developed a genetic algorithm based synchronized traffic signal plan calculator. Major components of the system are:

  • Genetic Algorithm based traffic plan optimizer
  • An elementary road traffic simulator for a given network of signalized intersections
  • GUI for data entry and for formulating the road network model
May 2000 to May 2003: Pursuing for a Doctor of Engineering degree in Telecommunication Engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. The topic of the thesis is Adaptive Rate Control Techniques for Video Coding.

May 2003 to Feb 2004: Academic Visitor to the Department of Computer Science, Loughborough University. Research is Stereoscopic Video Coding.

June 2004 to date: Post Doctoral Research Associate, Electronic and Computer Engineering, Brunel University. Research in Communicational Video Transmission over Cellular Mobile Applications.
