Drive to Whangarei, and continue on through the outskirts on the road North. The turn off to Matapouri is in the suburb of Tikipunga. Keep your eyes out for a sign directing you to the Whangarei Falls (well worth a look on the way through). Carry on from the falls, following signs to Ngunguru and/or Tutukaka. The road is tar sealed all the way, and the actual units are on the corner of Kukupa and Matapouri roads just as you come down the hill into Matapouri.
The Units.
In front on the top floor, has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds, each with a duvet and pillows. There is a double bed-settee in the lounge. Maximum sleeping capacity, six people. Current tariff is $30.00 per night for two people.
At the rear on the top floor, has three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two singles, and the other with a set of bunks. There is a double bed-settee in the lounge. The double bed, single beds and bunks have duvets and pillows. Unit two has a sundeck on three sides. Maximum sleeping capacity is eight people. Current tariff is $30.00 per night for two people.
Ideally suited for people who have difficulty climbing up and down stairs and people with small children. At the rear on the ground floor. The partitioned bedroom has a double bed on one side and two single beds on the other, each with a duvet and pillows. There is a double bed-settee in the lounge. The unit opens up to the lawns in the back and is cooler in the summer. Maximum sleeping capacity is six people. Current tariff is $30.00 per night for two people.
All units incur a $6.00 per person per night surcharge for all extra people above two, excepting pre-school age children.
In the front on the ground floor, occupied by the resident caretakers.
General Information.
Each unit has an electric range, electric fry pan, refrigerator with freezing capacity, microwave, vacuum cleaner, and the usual kitchen requirements such as toaster, electric jug, pots and pans, salt and pepper shakers, crockery and cutlery. There is a television and radio in each unit. Each unit has its own shower and toilet. Jiff cleanser and dish washing liquid is provided. A large capacity washing machine, ironing board and iron are available in the laundry.
Each double and single bed is provided with pillows, and a winter weight (270 grams) duvet. No pillows or bed coverings are provided for the double bed-settees There are spare pillows in each unit.
What to Take.
You will need sheets, pillowslips, towels, tea towels, toilet rolls and toiletries. (There are no complimentary shampoos and soaps provided at these prices!) If you intend to use the bed settees or bunks in Unit 2 you will also need blankets, and dont forget some rubbish bags. The local store sells most basic groceries (at dairy prices), newspapers and day-to-day requirements, but if there are some gourmet items that you cannot do without it may pay to take them with you. There are take away food facilities at Matapouri, Tutukaka and Ngunguru.
While we prefer guests to pick up the keys chit from the RSA, this is often impracticable for someone living in, say, Orewa or Whangaparaoa. (Why come all the way to Henderson then drive back past your starting point to get to Matapouri?) Once you receive your confirmation of booking, if you post us the required payment in full, we will post the Keys chit back to you to save this hassle. You will need this chit to assure the caretakers that you have in fact paid the amount in full, so it is important that you have it with you when you arrive.
While You are There.
Please remember that others may be staying in other units, and have probably gone there for the peace and quiet. Be thoughtful and considerate when using radios or television, or having those late night drinks with friends. It goes without saying that you should not enter any other unit without being invited to by the occupants. Please let the caretakers know if anything breaks or is not working (but remember that they probably do not need to know about a blown light bulb at 2am in the morning!) They will, of course, need to know about a flood in your unit at that time of the morning though.
If you take more people to Matapouri than you have booked for, please tell the caretakers on arrival and pay the additional tariff. Likewise, if guests arrive and stay overnight, please tell the caretakers and pay the additional tariff. It is important that the caretakers know exactly how many people are in the units should an emergency evacuation arise.
You are welcome to have visitors during the day, but please remember that others may be enjoying the peace and tranquility. Visitors may not park their vehicles on the property, and just like you they may not erect tents or park caravans there. All visitors are expected to be clear of the units by 10pm. If you have visitors to stay overnight, you will be charged $6.00 per person per night on top of your tariff. Remind your visitors that pets are not permitted on the property either, and please ensure that the property gates are shut after each entry and egress.
Apart from the road frontage, there is only grass parking inside the property. All parking is at the discretion of the Caretakers who have the final say on whether parking inside the property is permitted. In normal circumstances, tenants may park one vehicle or one boat inside the property, but not both. On occasions, such as in heavy rain or for other unforeseen circumstances, parking inside the property may not be permitted. The decision of the caretakers is final with regard to parking.
Water.
The units are on tank water for cooking and drinking and ablutions. If it doesnt rain, no water goes into the tanks. Please remember this when showering and running taps in general. Excess use, especially in the summer, could mean that no water is available in any of the units.
The phone number for the units is 09 434 3223, and is a toll call from Auckland. All units have a telephone and the caretakers switch incoming calls to the appropriate unit. Toll calls cannot be made from the units (and Auckland is a toll call from there!). The caretakers phone is not available for private calls but there is a card phone situated opposite the Matapouri Store and cards are available from the store. Be aware that some cell phones will not work at Matapouri either, so if you need to keep in contact with someone out of the Whangarei area, arrange to have them call you or be prepared to use the card phone.
After Your Stay.
It is your responsibility to leave the unit in a clean and presentable condition. (At these prices we do not employ housemaids or cleaners!) Please vacuum and/or mop floors, and clean your shower, toilet, basin etc. All dishes and utensils should be washed, dried and put away, and any foodstuffs removed from the fridge and cupboards. Please take rubbish bags with you and leave them at the council rubbish station on the way out of Matapouri. All cleaning equipment is supplied in the units, but please remember to conserve water while you do it! For your own peace of mind, ask the caretakers to check your unit before you leave so that you cant be blamed if you have done your bit to help!
If you have booked a unit, our caretakers will make every attempt to meet you on arrival. This sometimes means that they have to put off other plans such as shopping for the units or similar. If you are expected on a certain date, it is most frustrating for the caretakers if you change your mind and dont arrive on the expected day. Please, - if you are not going to arrive when expected, phone the units direct and let them know or phone the Clubrooms (838 9012) which are manned till closing time each night and get the Duty Manager to pass your message on to the Caretakers.
The caretakers are the agents of the owners, the Henderson RSA. They will readily give you advice and assistance, and please, follow any instructions that they give with regard to rules under which we operate the units. Enjoy your stay, and if things are great, tell all your friends. If things are not to your satisfaction, please tell us so that we can try to make it right.
