The Office of Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual
Services is an administrative office within the University's Division of
Student Affairs. This office is a resource created to assist those
students who are struggling with their sexuality, in need of information
on sexual orientation or issues for personal and/or academic use. This
office is staffed by a Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and volunteers.
|
|
Our services and programs support the needs of lesbian,
gay, transgender, and bisexual (l/g/b/t) students, faculty, and staff at
West Chester University for information pertinent to their lives; for
acknowledgment that they are valued members of the West Chester Community;
for the security of knowing they have a voice within the university; and
for a sense of community, with recognition of the diversity within this
community.
|
|
We are also a resource for anyone on campus who wants to
know more about l/g/b/t life and culture, or who wants to discuss
l/g/b/t-related issues or concerns.
|
| What We Offer |
Safe Space & Support: Our office space is itself "safe
space", available to individuals or groups who want to meet, talk,
or browse through our resource materials in private. Our office offers
two resource staff members who are available for students to discuss any
l/g/b/t-related matters in an atmosphere of privacy and respect. We work
with and support the efforts of campus l/g/b/t groups. We also provide
support, consultation and referrals on l/g/b/t issues to campus
departments and programs.
|
| Events and Programs |
We provide events and programs ranging from the entertaining to the
academic, including, but not limited to the following:
|
Student Group for LGBT Students and Friends Outreach Workshops
Current Periodicals & Resource Library Peer Support Social Programs
Community Resources Outreach Programs: Our office staff and Volunteer
Outreach Program speakers are available to speak to campus groups on
l/g/b/t-related topics. We believe that knowledge reduces prejudice and
increases respect and understanding.
|
| Ally Program |
This program began because our l/g/b/t students are nearly invisible
on our campus and often find the climate uninviting and hostile. These
conditions defeat attempts at fostering student development and growth
making it difficult for l/g/b/t students to receive all the benefits of
a quality education. Participants in this program can be recognized by
the "LGBT Safe Place" sticker they have posted in their
office. If you are interested in becoming an active participant in this
program, please contact the LGBT Services Office to arrange for a
training session.
