The de Boer family originates from Steenwijkerwold in Overijssel but got its family name in 1811 in the village of Blesdijke in Weststellingwerf in Friesland. From this family Harke de Boer went with his wife and 5 children around 1886 to America. The family name of De Boer was officially registered by the children of Grietjen Tijmens who married Meine Geuverts thereby accepting their mother's surname which was already used by her father Tijmen Jans de Boer in 1749. The children of Grietjen's sister Aaltien, who was married to Wolter Arjens, also accepted the family name De Boer. The descendants of Aaltien Tijmens de Boer are shown as Family de Boer 2.
