The succession to the British Throne is regulated by
the Act of Settlement (1701). According to that act all legitimate descendants
of the Electress Sophia of Hanover are eligible to succeed. The succession is
male preferred primogeniture.
A person eligible to succeed who is baptised in the roman-catholic faith,
converts to the roman-catholic faith, or marries to a person with the roman-
catholic faith is automatically excluded from the succession.
According to the Royal Marriages Act (1772) the children from a marriage of a
person eligible to succeed that is conducted without consent of the sovereign
are not entitled to succeed.
