Panama Story-Chapter 19
Chapter Nineteen

Let's begin to wrap this up!

While walking along the romantic riverwalk that runs through downtown San Antonio, Texas, John could only
think morbid thoughts of suicide and death. He feared death but now feared life even more. Alone was not what he wanted to be! The decision to end it all was easy to arrive at for him. Doing it was completely another thing! John moved into his own small but clean apartment away from Judy and his two teenage children. He found such solace in strolling the riverwalk alone that he began to incorporate an evening walk into his schedule after work each day. He was now employed across town at the Baxer County Hospital as a Social Worker. John had a case load of just under one hundred clients, a relatively few number of cases to watch over compared to the heavy hitters in the Department. The current record was held by a woman who retired a few years back. She had a total of almost 675 cases! An incredible record of helping others that still stands today.

John was now starting to enjoy his new line of work helping others. He found it reassuring and comforting to
be able to help others with more severe problems than he had. Every time he would become depressed he
thought of some of his unfortunate clients without homes, jobs, or families. John still had his elder mother who lived nearby. She was old and still needed some looking after because of her age and infirmity (sickness). His only sibling, a sister Angela, was married now and had two sons of her own. His sister Angela lives in Dallas just a six hour drive north on Interstate 35.

One day John met a woman named Paula on a tour of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. She had worked
with him at the Hospital and has just recently completed her dissertation and has been awarded a PhD in
Psychology. Paula should be able to help John adjust to his changing life better than Judy could. One knew
him as a young strong man with great hope and potential. Paula knows him as a sick HCV patient that
desperately needs love and support. John has recently begun a new life with Paula. Judy has moved to
Colorado with their two kids. No one visits Christina's grave anymore. It is much too painful. Life moves on,
and so does death. John's life has moved on!

There is no mass of land over the North Pole of the planet Earth. It appears to have a surface but looks can
be deceiving. It is all ocean, the Arctic Ocean! The North Pole is a thick mass of floating and ever shifting ice.
The first explorers to visit that part of the world was the famous American Aviator and polar explorer U.S. Navy Admiral Robert E. Byrd (1888-1957) and Floyd Bennet his assistant. Robert Byrd was born in Winchester,
Virginia, located in the historic and beautiful Shenadoah valley of the Appalachian Mountains. The Blue Ridge
Mountains overlook the valley and are located in the middle of the East coast of the United States. The small
city of Winchester was first surveyed in the mid 1740's by a young 21 year old land owner named George
Washington! In George's young day Winchester, Virginia, was considered the "Wild West" of America.
Complete with wild game and fierce Shenadoahen Indians!

Further to the south in the Smokey Mountains of the Carolinas were the real Cherokee Indians. The Cherokees had lived there for thousands of years before they were forced to walk to Oklahoma by the U.S. Military. It was done in the name of "Manifest Destiny" in the now infamous "Trail of Tears" that killed many of them. A once proud people were thrown off their ancestral land and forced to walk at gun point 2,000 miles into the middle of an emptiness to start a new "lifestyle". Manifest Destiny stated that the new European Americans were entitled to any of the land they seized in the Americas. They believed that they were entitled to it because God said so! They believed that they were endowed with Manifest Destiny and were the natural heirs to the new continent!  From the start America has been taking resources in the name of expansion. It was founded on arrogance.

Nothing stands in the way of the American Century! Not even Americans! Not even a yellow fever carrying
mosquito. Expansion and exploration in the name of Science and Technology is what America understands
best. It has been that way here in America for over 375 years now. Raw energy and power create raw arrogance and conflict. The American people are a collection of the world's peoples and cultures. America represents the best of all cultures on the planet. It is truly a cultural melting pot that blends many elements of societies together. To look at America is to look towards the world itself and it's past history! Everyone blames us but everyone wants to come and live here too!

In 1926 Admiral Byrd and Floyd Bennett made the first flyover of the North Pole from Spitzbergen, Norway, and back. Many years later it was calculated that Admiral Byrd was considerably far off course and never really made it all the way to the North Pole! In later years scientist would recalculate his navigational route and account for the daily "ice shift" at the North Pole (up to 50 feet a day) and they would discover that Byrd was really miles off course and never made it to the Pole at all! We still give him the credit for the "exploration" of the North Pole. All he did was fly "almost" over it and he gets all the credit!

Robert F. Scott (1868-1912) was a famed British Navel Officer and an Antarctic Explorer! The South Pole is
covered by the large continent of Antarctica. Antarctica is covered with ice one mile thick in some places and
hangs hundreds of miles out into the Antarctic Ocean on many sides. This ledge or shelf of ice is called the
Ross Ice Shelf. In 1912 Scott and his men braved freezing temperature for months to get to the south pole first. When they arrived on January 18, 1912 they had found that the seasoned Norwegian Explorer, Roald
Amundsen, had come and gone a month earlier. On the return trip Scott's expedition was beset by illness and
bad weather. They were forced to stay in small tents until the weather got better and they were healthy again.
The weather got worse and their food supply, water, and health ran out! Months later their five frozen bodies
were found huddled together dead in their small tents. They had not made it back alive. Amundsen was
considered a great world hero and was given full credit for being the first explorer to arrive at the South Pole. Scott gave his life and the lives of his men but has been forgotten by the history books. Admiral Byrd was an American. Scott was not! The victors always get to write the history books the way they want to! To the victors goes the spoils of war!

After Kevin was called at home by the FDA he began to become concerned. He could not find any information
on Adenoviruses except Quantum Biotechnologies, that sold them. He also had an obvious agreed upon
"prepared statement" that at least three governments were involved in "crafting". His wife, Tina, was a Nurse
in a local hospital and spoke with the Infection Control person at the hospital. The infection control person
called the FDA and asked questions about HCV and Adenoviruses. Immediately after speaking with the FDA
this person spoke with Tina and conveyed what the FDA had said to her. Tina relayed the information and
phone number of the Biological Department of the FDA to Kevin. Only the FDA and the NIH have jurisdiction
when it comes to "oversight responsibilities" of genetics, and genetic engineering, in America. Kevin placed
a late afternoon telephone call to a phone number and left a message about Adenoviruses and HCV on a
machine. It was that phone message that the FDA was now returning and replying to when they had called
Kevin at home and spoke with him on a speaker phone.

Kevin knew that these large impersonal government agencies could swat him out of the air like a fly if they
wanted to. If what he was starting to find information on was true then they would do more than swat him!
Especially since he was still an Army Officer in the Reserves. "These people do not fool around!" Kevin
remembered thinking. "I need to confront them on their level, politics!" Kevin soon realized. All these great
Heads of Agencies were there because they "played" the game of politics. They had scratched someone's back to be appointed their position. Rarely is it the case that a well deserving individual gets placed where they can do the most good for the Nation as a whole. Usually, it is who you are connected to and who you recently helped or backed politically. Power politics in Washington, D.C. is brutal and is a "blood sport". Kevin would play their game. He would use his mind and the rights granted to him as a citizen! It was not even going to be a fair fight! The Agency Heads would be locked into their publicly stated positions, Kevin was not. He could circle them like trapped prey! Then pounce! The trap was almost set!

Mark is presently awaiting his medical records from the VA. He was recently informed that they do not have
his entire folder. Surprise, surprise! Welcome to the VA Mark! Mark is feeling better these days and takes his
life one day at a time. He has yet to confront the VA Doctor with the results of his blood test. Mark has decided to wait until a more coordinated effort can be made with Kevin. When Kevin is ready to enter the system they both can compare notes and track the process of veteran care. Kevin will be applying for VA benefits himself soon. Mark has returned to living a normal life but must still be concerned for his future. His employer does own a genetics laboratory across the street from Mark's office and they do watch him very closely. He is a good loyal employee and continues to have a good bright future with the mega- monster of a corporation. Toni watches Mark very closely. She has to! Her children and Mark are her life!

Mark's Mega-Monster Corporation is involved in genetic research and has been for the last thirty years. To say that they did not know about Adenoviruses and HCV is to say that they didn't know what a test tube was or
where the light switch is in their office. Of course they knew! Just as all the major institutions and corporations working with this dangerous Adenovirus knew! Who would dare be the first to speak out on that level? Billions in government contracts would be lost! Think about it folks! It makes sense. Power politics isn't only played in Washington, D.C.! To the victors goes the spoils of war. In an economic battle of global trade wars the victor wins the world! World domination is at stake. To win is to win it all. To lose is to lose it all. To be in between is not the American way! It is either one or the other. We either win it all or we take the ball and go home! Just ask the Vietnamese people.

You turn around and see your spouse behind you in the Infectious Laboratory's Command Center of Plum
Island. "What's happened to me?" you ask knowing you will finally get an honest answer from your spouse.
"I can't tell you!" your spouse confesses sadly. "Why not?" you plead. "What about the Evil Director and his
agents of destruction?" you want to know. "The Director has been arrested and taken into federal custody!"
you are informed. "He has spent his career covering up the HCV crisis. As the Director he controlled what
could be said publicly about the virus. He decided long ago that nothing would be said. He is now being
charged with five million cases of attempted murder!" your spouse tells you. "What about the other 195 million people infected world-wide?" you quip with a grin.

"The Evil Director knew you were on to him when you discovered the key was the Adenovirus testing and the
1942 test contaminated with HBV. Once he realized you connected the HBV and combined it with the Yellow
Fever vaccine he knew you had him. Also once he realized that you read all of his public writings he could no
longer deny or continue hiding it any longer", she informs you. "But why Ames Iowa?" you ask right off.
Director Cane interjects with, "All in good time Doctor. Could you and your spouse please follow me this way."
He points to the glass doors and leaves the Command Center. The Laboratory Director returns upstairs to his
office with you and your spouse following silently behind. "Right this way please" he says as he opens a side
door in his teak paneled office. The door opens to a conference room that has a large teleconference screen
at the front of the room. The only object you notice on the large wide screen is the great seal of the President of the United States!

"Have a seat please." Director Cane offers as he pulls out a chair for you. "Shall I call the chef so you and your spouse may order a meal if you are hungry?" he says with his hands clasped and raised to his chin. "Just push that button on the table if you need anything" he tells you and then turns and exits the room. Your spouse and you are left alone looking repeatedly at each other and the great seal of the president in front of you on the screen. "Five minutes folks, we just got a heads up from the White House!" a ceiling speaker announces to the almost empty conference room. You look back at your spouse bewildered and shrug. "Oh well might as well sit back and enjoy the show" playfully you say. You lean far back in your large comfortable executive high- top chair. The chair is one of those with the thick adjustable arm pads and smooth-riding wheels at the base. You begin to roll the chair around in small circles waiting for something to happen. It soon does! But not what you expected!

Kevin soon began to formulate a strategy to approach and confront the government with. Rather than he
attacking or accusing he would use their own words against them! He needed to find sympathetic researchers to guide "the hunt" that he was on. To him initially the most important issue was finding all of the other soldiers from Germany and warning them to go get tested. To Kevin this simply represented a matter of life and death. If another year or two passed until they were all notified then that alone could be a long enough delay that antiviral therapies would no longer be a viable option to them. They could have been sick now for 21 years like Mark, John and Kevin. It places veterans in a known-about risk (harm's way) that was
acknowledged from the highest levels of the government with a paper trail a mile long. The trail was forged
prior to the Internet's ability to search the world for information. It is like they are caught in a snowstorm
without any pants on! They want to shovel the snow and we want to say, "put your pants back on! Have some
dignity and confess to what you really know!" They won't confess so we'll keep their pants from them until they say "more HCV funding"! Then they will only get their underwear back!

Kevin drafted a long letter telling of his knowledge of what he had found out. He copied the letter and sent it
around the world to Australia and many other places. He knew the Americans could control information here
in America, but they may not be able to control another free country's speech. He sent the letter to a woman
that is the manager of a world-wide data base for every virus know to man. Any researcher looking for
information on viruses knows about the I.C.T.V. (International Conference on Taxonomy of Viruses). It is the
definitive source on basic viral information relating to any virus that exists in nature. She wrote back that she
could not help Kevin, but maybe Doctor Purcell at the NIH could. Kevin's light went off in his head. He wrote
a similar letter to Dr. Purcell the head of the Hepatitis C Section at the NIH and said that he was referred by this other world famous expert. Professional courtesy would require Dr. Purcell to reply. The snare was set!

Kevin also found a man on the Internet that teaches at Harvard and works at Massachusetts General Hospital
in Boston. This man was working with Adenoviruses and HBV. The man is also concurrently studying HCV.
It appears that he uses the Adenovirus as a delivery molecule to enter the liver cell nucleus and help HBV
integrate into the DNA. He is also expressing HCV plasmids in the cytoplasm of the liver cells. Two and two
is four! Why would Harvard be on the wrong path?

On the evening of March 5th, 1998 Kevin was researching with the television on in the background of his study. He overheard a short news segment announcing that there would be hearings the following day on Capitol Hill. The hearings, it went on to explain, would concern 300,000 unexplained cases of HCV prior to 1990. Included to speak was the CDC, VA, Surgeon General, and the American Liver Foundation. When Kevin heard these names and agencies he knew then who the culprits were! At least who were the cover-up artists today.

Who is responsible for tracking and treating this disease? The NIH? Nope! All of the above answering to
congress! There has obviously been a coordinated attempt to conceal the larger HCV story. This would explain why no one knows about a virus that has invaded the military and the blood supply. Aids was known about for almost 10 years. No one knew to check the blood? Did the scientists think they had found every virus in the blood? Arrogance! Do they believe today the blood supply is safe? If so how? How can they be sure? We were told it was safe during and after the Aids scare. In fact, it has never been publicly "unsafe". Why are five million infected then?

After the news announcement Kevin's gut said "move and move now!" He quickly wrote a flurry of letters to
the President, CDC, ALF, VA, 15 Senators on key Senate Committees, 15 Congressman on key House
Committees and Dr. Purcell once again. He did not write right back to Kevin with a letter fast enough so Kevin informed him that he had notified his elected representatives of Dr. Purcell's failure to respond to him. Within 48 hours a two page letter arrived in Kevin's E-mail box! It was from Dr. Purcell himself. It may turn out to have been the biggest professional mistake that he has made! (SNAP!) The trap has sprung! The prey is caught! Wounded animals can be very dangerous when cornered. Be careful Kevin!

"The President of the United States", a deep voice booms throughout the soundproof room. As you watch the
large screen in front of you, four secret service agents enter the conference room and line up in each of the
four corners of the room. A fifth agent enters shortly afterwards behind them and cordially greets you, "Doctor, I'm agent Ramboskey!" he claims and his firm handshake nearly rips your hand off your wrist. "I protect the President and I need to give you both a quick security search! Ok?" he asks you and your spouse with the look of "you have no other choice in the matter!" "Fine" you agree to him timidly. "Thank you!" he says and begins to walk out of the conference room. "Excuse me Agent Ramboskey?" you ask. "Yes Doctor?" he snaps back as he stops quick and squarely faces you. "About the search?" you begin to inquire. "Already done! Like I said, thank you!" he answers smartly. "we use a scanner that is located in the next room. We can observe different layers of clothing if we need to with an X-ray type directed electron beam." he finally tells you. "Oh?" you admit stunned. "Can you see all the way.." you begin to blush. "Yes we can! That is why we need your permission!" he tells you. "Anything else Doctor?" he asks you. "Yeah! What is going on here exactly?" you want to know.
