In the year 2000, an unknown explosion occured in Antarctica which caused roughly half the world's population to survive. This event is known as the "Second Impact." According to the U.N., its just a Giant Meteorite, but there were many rumors likewise.
It's now 2015. Mysterious etities known as Angels, started to appear and causing mayhem to the left population. All conventional weapons prooved useless against them, including U.N.'s key weapon, the N-2 Bomb, because of its mysterious field the angels hold.
The only weapons that can penetrate this mysterious field are biological giants, which obtain similar fields, known as Evangelions (EVAs). These giants require the control of a pilot by syncronizing the pilot's mind within. Thus, the pilot's senses are extended into the Evangelion.
