Disclaimers: They belong to Jason Katims and the WB people, not me. The song belongs to The Flys.
Notes: Okay, this fic is strange, and that is because I actually dreamed it. Yes I know... Michael dreams = very good! Seriously though, replace me with Maria and you basically have my dream, song and everything. Of course I reworked it so it made a little more sense, but you get the gist. Also, I couldn't remember the names of the rest of the guys in Alex & Maria's band, so I made some up. If you know them send them to me and I'll fix it.
"Hey everyone, thanks for coming! We're the Whits!" The drumsticks clicked together, counting off the beat, and they kicked
into their own song "Love Kills". Maria sang the lyrics, drawing from her own experience with Michael for the emotional highs
and lows in her voice. They really won the crowd over in that song and the Pizza Pan manager looked at her from behind the
counter, giving her a thumbs up.
This was a very important gig- their first paying one, and Alex had stressed that things needed to be flawless, so they had spent
the entire week practicing. Finally, on Thursday afternoon they felt ready- Maria knew all the words and was finally clicking on
the originals, and after some convincing the band was kind of into doing some good covers.
So of course, something was bound to go wrong. During the last song of the first set, their drummer had fallen off his stool
behind the kit. They tried to finish the song gracefully, but they had ended up cutting it off early and rushing over to see what
was wrong.
They dragged him off stage, and placed him on the couch in the back room. "Pete, man, what's wrong?" asked Alex in a panic.
He was shaking violently, sweat beads forming on his forehead. "I think I have Mono. I wasn't feeling good yesterday and my
girlfriend has it."
"And you didn't think that was important enough to mention?" Maria nearly shouted at him. "If we don't finish the show we're
not going to get paid and they'll never ask us back. There's no place else in Roswell to play!"
Pete spoke quickly. "I wasn't sure I was going to get sick, and I thought I could make it through. Oh god, I think I'm going to
throw up." He sat up quickly and rushed to the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.
The Pizza Pan manager, Jack, stuck his head in is just as Pete had closed the bathroom door. "Hey, guys, you're doing great!
They love you out there. I can't wait to see the second set- and later we can talk about when you're free to play again okay?"
"Sure, no problem," said Alex. "Glad you like it!" he added as the door closed behind the older man.
They watched at the manager shut the door, then Maria groaned out loud. "ARRRGGGGHHHHH! What are we going to do?"
Alex looked over at the other two band members, who shrugged their shoulders non-commitally. Then a thought struck him.
"Maria, hold the fort. I'll be back in a minute." Alex went bounding out of the room quickly, leaving Maria to sit and
contemplate tearing out her hair.
When he returned a minute later with Isabel and Michael in tow, she thought she was going to strangle him. "Alex what can they possibly do?"
He turned to his two guitarists and quietly asked them to give him a minute alone with the 3 others. They shook their heads in
wonder but complied. Then he looked to Maria. "They can help."
Isabel looked from Maria to Alex and back again. "What's the emergency? Maria did you break a nail?"
Michael laughed and Alex rolled his eyes at her. "Isabel, our drummer is sick and he can't go on. We need you to fix him so we
can finish the show."
Michael answered before Isabel could open her mouth. "No way! She's not fixing anyone. It's bad enough that you guys know- we're not revealing ourselves to anyone else."
Isabel looked at Michael harshly. "Michael, calm down." She turned to Alex. "You know I can't do it. There would be too
many questions without answers. It's too dangerous, Alex."
Maria threw her hands up in the air in frustration. "Oh great! We're finally doing well and we're going to lose the only gig we
have because Pete was stupid enough to catch Mono." She looked at Michael and Isabel. "What good is knowing Aliens with
special powers if they can't even use them to help you?"
Alex looked at Isabel with a pleading look, but she shook her head no, knowing there was no way she could do it. She looked
to Michael, who had been silent since his outburst moments earlier. It looked like there were several gears in his head turning
quickly. "Michael?" she asked, eyes questioning.
"I've got an idea. Where's Pete?"
"In the bathroom, why?" asked Alex.
"C'mon Is." He grabbed her hand and dragged her to the door. "Pete, man, are you okay in there?"
A groan was all the reply he got. Michael opened the door slowly, only to find the other teen passed out on the floor. Alex
rushed over and helped Michael place him back on the couch. "What's your idea?"
Michael looked from Isabel to Alex and finally to Maria. "Is, I want you to copy his talent and transfer it to me."
Alex and Maria both looked at Isabel in wonder. "You can do that?" asked the singer.
Isabel rolled her eyes and then gave Michael a death glare. "It's something I've been working on. The transfer of ability isn't
easy, Michael, and you know that. I don't think I should."
"Izzy, c'mon. It's the only way. I can play the rest of the set for Pete. No one knows anything about me. For all they know I
could be a drummer. It'll work, I know it."
"Michael, I don't know... what would Max say?"
"Max isn't here, Isabel." Maria stepped in to beg, "Please?"
She turned to Alex, who was once again giving her that pleading look. "Please Isabel? It would help us so much."
Exhaling loudly, she shook her head in the affirmative, then placed her hand on Pete's chest. A blue luminescence glowed
around her fingers and the area she touched glowed red. She motioned for Michael to come closer, and she placed her other
hand on his chest, the same blue glow transferring to him, illuminating his torso and arms. It ended and Michael looked dazed.
Maria reached out and touched his arm. "Michael? Are you okay?"
Snapping out of the fog, he registered where he was and who he was with. "Yeah. I'm fine."
Alex looked at him. "Do you feel any different? Can you play now?"
He shook his head. "I think so, yeah. I'm ready when you are." He walked over to the table in the corner and picked up Pete's
drumsticks, tapping them lightly on the table, then twirling them through his fingers. "Yeah. I can do it."
Maria and Isabel grinned, and Alex crushed the taller blond in a hug. "That was amazing. Thank you so much." He kissed her
on the cheek and she blushed.
A knock on the door snapped them back to reality. "Alex, Maria... we have to go on now. Is Pete okay?"
Maria walked confidently over to the door and opened it. "No, but we have the next best thing. This is Michael. He's going to
finish the set with us."
"Hey." was all Michael said. The two guys looked suspiciously at Maria and Alex.
"Are you sure he can do it?" asked one.
"Yeah, I mean, we've never even heard him play," added the other.
Alex walked over and placed a hand on both their shoulders. "Trust me. It'll be as if Pete was playing himself."
They shrugged and followed Alex out to the stage. Maria grabbed Michael's hand and dragged him out with her.

An hour later, the set was coming to a close. Michael had played flawlessly, and the big closing song was up. Maria leaned in to the Mic and began to sing.
Hey what's the point of this?
Hey what's your favorite song?
Maybe we could hum along.
Alex leaned in to his Mic for the backing vocals on the bridge & chorus, while staring at Isabel in the audience. At the words,
he noticed she was blushing again.
I think you're smart, you sweet thing
Tell me your name, I'm dying here
Oooooh, Got you where I want you
Oooooh got you where I want you, oh yeah.
Maria turned her back to the audience to look directly at her new drummer, who was keeping perfect time.
Hey, maybe just a smile
Oh hey, did you know that I can dance?
Can we talk for a while?
I think you're smart, you sweet thing
Tell me your sign, I'm dying here
Oooh, got you where I want you
Ooooo got you where I want you,
Where I want you, I want you
She turned back to face the crowd, pouring her heart into the song. A few minutes later they finished off to thunderous
applause. Maria smiled. "Thank you. We're the Whits. And we'll be here again soon, so come back and see us."
The band members and Michael walked off stage, Maria heading straight for the dressing room. Michael watched her go, but
was quickly distracted by the thank yous and handshakes from Alex and his friends. He smiled shyly, not used to the praise.
Maria came out of the dressing room a minute later.
"Hey guys- Pete's kind of conscious. He wants to talk to you." The three boys walked away with a few final words of gratitude
for Michael, then headed in to see their ailing friend.
Maria approached Michael. Handing him a towel, she said, "You're all sweaty."
He took it, wiping his forehead and neck. "I didn't know being a drummer was such hard work."
"You did great, Michael. But you know you didn't have to do that."
He shook his head. "I know."
She stepped a bit closer, pushing a stray lock of wet hair off of his forehead. "Now I owe you one. How am I supposed to
repay you for saving the band?"
"I'm sure we'll think of something." He said with a grin. "In fact, I think I already have." He moved toward her fluidly capturing
her mouth in an intense kiss. Her eyes fluttered shut and she could barely breathe. Michael smiled as her arms wound around
his neck almost involuntarily, his arms snaking out to pull her tighter against his body. He pulled away slightly and whispered,
"Got you where I want you", against her lips before resuming the mind-blowing kiss.
