William Arthur Brown was born February 27, 1912, the second child and eldest son of W. M. and Sudia Cleo "Westmoreland" Brown. As a child he attended the Union Point School and worked with his Father hauling dirt, digging wells and digging basements utilizing mules and slip scrapes. One of the jobs they completed was the planting of trees in the Old American Thread Mill Village of U. S. Highway 41 South. Later on he began work for Mr. Floyd Holloway driving a gasoline delivery truck at the Speed Oil Company. Shortly before World War II he moved to Charleston, SC to work in the US Naval Shipyard as a Pipefitter. He remained in Charleston until after World War II and then returned to his birthplace in Whitfield County, GA. Upon his return he obtained a job at Speed Oil Company. A short time later he found employment at North Georgia Oil Company as a truck driver. He remained in this line of work until his retirement in 1974.
After returning from Atlanta, they contracted with Mr. Jess Brumbelow to build them a new home at 114 Spring Hill Drive in Dalton on property they purchased before going to Charleston. They borrowed $1200 from the First National Bank to build their home. They raised both their sons there and remained until Arthur's death in 1992. The house was later sold to Lane Walker.
Arthur met Mabel Ruth Moore at a church revival in 1932. After courting her for a while they were married in Murray County, GA, December 17, 1933, at the residence of Reverend Oscar Davis. They moved into his parent's home and he continued to work with his father. William Brown gave them a parcel of property on what is now known as Short Street in Dalton where they built a three room "shotgun" home. He later recollected that it cost .75¢ to have the house wired for electricity. Arthur and Mabel both worked nights hand-tufting bedspreads for which it would take six to eight days to complete one. For this they earned two dollars each. After saving their money for some time Arthur decided to buy their first automoblie-- a Ford Model "T" (used). He spent Twenty-five dollars on this automobile. Mother later stated she cried for days for it had taken four months for them to save that amount of money.
Mabel was born September 20, 1914 in Polk County, TN. She was the daughter of John Franklin Moore and Maggie Lella "Mantooth". John was a farmer who barely made a living, All the children had to work in the cotton fields, moving frequently from Conasauga, TN to Eton, GA to gain work by share-cropping. John was taken ill and was an invalid for several years prior to his death in 19128. Mother was the designated caregiver, housekeeper and cook during this time, while the other children worked in the fields. After his death Leila remarried and Mother moved to Dalton to live with her sister Rozelle "Moore" Bailey and her husband Claude. Mabel continued to reside with them until her mother became pregnant with her sister Clara "Harold" Cleckler. At that time she moved back to help her mother. Eventually Mabel moved back to live with her sister and brother-in-law. At this time they lived in a railroad section house located off Brickyard Road. Mother used to reminisce about hobos coming to their door and begging for food. They always frightened her a great deal. She recanted memories of picking cotton when she was 6-7 years old. Sometimes she and her siblings would have to help each other pull their cotton sacks along the rows.
Mabel didn't work outside the home after the boys were born until after they were grown. In 1963 she began work at the Valley Point School supervising the day care program. She continued this vocation for seven years until the old school cafeteria and cannery burnt down. Later she worked at Lady Madison Company until her retirement in 1979.
Arthur and Mabel were both raised in the Baptist faith. The later joined the Five Springs Methodist Church in 1952. Arthur served on the official board of that church for over twenty years. He was the Sunday School superintendent and song director for seventeen years. They jointly served as Methodist Youth Fellowship counselors for fifteen years. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary there in 1983. Both sons accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior at Five Springs. Jerry remains a member, Randall ironically changed back to the Baptist faith. Both Arthur and Mabel were highly respected in the church and community of Five Springs. Today there remains a pew dedicated to their memory in the Church.
Arthur and Mabel had issue of two sons: (1) Jerry Lamar Brown born October 29, 1939, married Nancy Ann Hufstetler on January 10, 1959. They had issue of three children Cynthia, Mark and Susan. (2) Randall G. Brown born November 27, 1946, marreid first Sandra Langford, had issue of two children, Mitzi and Tammy. Married second, Angela Faye Farner on October 16, 1981.
Both Arthur and Mabel rest in Whitfield Memorial Gardens in Dalton, GA.
