Welcome to Maddy and Terry's

Nova Scotia trip report

August/3-6/2001

Still have a few Canuck Bucks left so grab a round while they last. We left New York at 7am expecting a 6-8 hour slab ride to Portland Maine. Turned out to be 11 hours, 5 of which we were stuck in heavy rain and traffic as we hit the Maine border. 20 mph up Rt. 1 over to Rt. 95 back to Rt. 1 all the way in to Portland.

Finally made it to $3 Deweys were we met with netscum from across the country, Papaboop from Ca. Chuck and Barb Lanter from Idaho, Jim and Pat Butler from Mich, Roger Peterson also from Mich, TL Mitchell from Ohio, Don Anderson, Steve and Robin Tuttle from NH, Myself and Maddy from NY. After intros and photos we all sat around for a few hours drinking and eating telling our stories some true and having a bunch of laughs. We departed for the boat.

On board we all assembled in the lounge for more drinks, lies, plans, photos and laughs. Soon everyone made their way to our too small cabins, the casino or just wandering around the ship. Through the night we would run into one another and watch the storm following us to Ca, the ship seemed to be rocking a little too much for much sleep, although we tried. As dawn broke we prepared to depart for or next journey.

Once on shore we cleared customs and were greeted by residence netscum Tud and headed for breakfast. We made plans for the day and headed out. Steve and Robin slabbed it out to Halifax as Chuck led the rest of the group on a leisurely run up the coast. As expected the rain met us on the road and stayed with us for a few hours. We worked our way up the Bay of Fundy coast checking out all the interesting looking turn off's. We came upon a light house at the end of a long gravel road were Papa, TL and Rodger passed on and headed on up the road to meet the rest of us later.

The rest of us followed our maps and some locals recommendations till we reached Digby for a well deserved lunch break at a nice seafood restaurant. As we headed for our meet with the rest of the group with several side trips for good measure. Turns out we were late and they headed on without us. Onward we went, we crossed over Rt. 10 heading for the east coast towards Peggys Cove. On the way across we ran into the rain once more, but due t the heat it was a welcome relief. Soon we stopped and checked our maps were Chuck and Barb headed for the coast and Don led the rest of us up Rt. 103 to the cove. We visted the lighthouse at Peggys Cove and were all glad we stopped to visit it, had some much needed coffee and let Tud lead us the fast way into Halifax as dark and fatigue was starting to take over.

As we made our way into town, our wandering beemer riders met us on the road. A quick stop at Tud's place to check in(our 3 hr ride had turned into a 12 hr journey) then onto the hotel, where we were met by the rest of the group with cold beer's in hand. After dinner and many hours of story telling and drinking brews we slowly made our way to our rooms to prepare for the next day.

Sunday morning we woke late to the sound of Harleys making their way out of the parking lot. By the time I got out Papa, TL, Don and Roger were on their way. Missed saying farewell, so we got dressed and made our way to breakfast with Steve, Robin and Jim. After a good meal an more laughs, we headed back to our rooms and inished packing. Then loaded our bikes and said our goodbyes to the gang, as they headed north to the Cabot trail we aimed for Yarmouth.

We took the lighthouse trail hoping to see some lighthouses. The road was nice but not very scenic, at least for the most part. There was a wooden boat festival going on in Mahone Bay. It was too crowed to hang out for long so we kept going. A few stops here and there, nice people where ever we stoped, I think they could tell we had greenbacks to spend. We made it into Yarmouth around 6pm and checked into our hotel, then went to dinner and did some shopping in town.

Next am we headed for the ferry where we met a nice couple on a 20 year old Goldwing that just got back from the Cabot trail. So we got a good idea of what we missed(DAMN). Once on board we got a day cabin, only wish our cabin going to Nova Scotia was as nice. We spent the trip with our new friends, talking, gambling, karaoking and just having a good time. They invited us to stay with them in Rhode Island, and since Maddy didn't have much luck at the tabels we said sure. We followed them home and had a great time, he had a few nice Harleys to go with his Goldwing, a 98 Springer, an 80 FLH and a cool VW 3 wheeler. Then on tuesday we said goodbye to them and made our way thru Ct. home. It was a great time, even if we didn't get to do the whole trip, friends were made and memories were recorded. We also vowed to return someday to finish the rest of the run. Well thats the way I remember it, as they say "YMMV"
