A/N: This is kind of a Draco/Hermione romance, but mostly Hermione thinking about Draco. I really do like Draco, I
think his character has a lot of depth and is really interesting. This is how I feel about him. It’s really short, though. But
no, I don't think he and Hermione will end up together, it's just an interesting idea. If you despise Draco, read this, and
see if your feelings have changed.

Disclaimer: Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, Voldemort, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Goyle and
Severus Snape all belong to J.K. Rowling. These thoughts belong to me.

Sensing a Smile

by Destiny

I sit silently in Potions, not wanting to attract attention. I glance around the room, and my eyes fall on you. I look at your
pale face, hard with your misery and anger. What it must be like with your father, a Death Eater, I can’t imagine.
Coming home just to listen to his ranting and ravings about the coming of You-Know-Who. His expectations for you to
be just as evil as he was, is, and always will be. Slytherin’s expectations for you to be cruel must be difficult as well.

Because I know your secret. Deep inside your soul, you hate all of this evil, this cruelty, and causing the suffering of
others. But you must not show it, for the sake of your life. You are protecting your life from
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, your father, your house, and even those goons you call friends. If you showed any
kindness, they would all turn on you, hurt you, kill you. So you must be wretched to all of us. It is your duty to make fun
of Harry. You probably feel overshadowed by him, as we all do sometimes. You make Ron feel awful about his family,
and call me Mudblood, only because this is what you have to say. You suddenly turn your head to say something to
Goyle, and I see a small gash across your cheek. I gasp softly. Pity fills my heart, only strengthening my love. How did
you get that one? From Snape? Your father? This brings back the memory of when I slapped you in our third year. I
guess I was trying to bring you to your senses, realize your fault. But now I know that you already know, but just have to
hide that knowledge.

I guess you sense me looking at you, and your eyes snap to meet mine. Those steel, heartless gray eyes. When you
see it’s me looking at you, your eyes soften for a split second, and then harden. You scowl, and turn away. But I revel in
that moment of slight kindness.

Because I know your other secret. You experience joy, you have kindness, and you experience love. Love for me. And
deep underneath your cold exterior, I sense a smile.
