My battle station was #3 handling room passing 5" shells to the hoist and up to the twin 5" guns in * 3 mount. At Kwajelien when in the lagoon and anchored we damaged our own foc'sle(sp) with a 5" shell.We were so close to the beach the guns in #1 mount were nearly horizontal --- the wind shifted --the Phelps swung around on the anchor --- a 5" was fired --- hit the jack-stay---went out 50 yards and exploded --- shrapnel pierced the foc'sle and set the sail locker on fire! When the Phelps was hit at Saipan, mounts 3 & 4 were rapid fired at the Jap guns that hit us as we high-tailed it out of the area.
