My husband Dick Mitchell
was 49 and he had worked at General Motors in Wilmington for 30 years.
He had just retired in April.
He loved to go fishing on his boat and the family often went with him.
He was a dedicated fan of Dale Earnheart who died just 2 months after my
husband died.
He also loved the Pittsburg
Steelers and Lynard Synard. At his service we played the song, Freebird
in his memory. He loved our children so much. When I met him 4 years ago,
all his children were grown and he took mine under his care and loved them
so much.
Dick and J.P and Matt did
so much together. He loved being a pop-pop to little Donnie. He was a responsible
and dedicated husband and father.
During the housefire, he died
trying to save J.P. Matt, Shannon and little Donnie, he could have gone
out the window with me but instead, he stayed in the burning house to save
our children.

He reached my son J.P.
and they were found together trying to reach the window to get out.
He will always be remembered as a hero to me because he gave up his life
to try to save the children.
