A Special Gift

Just a short update from a proud Mommy. On December 27th Jillian donated her 12-inch ponytail to LOCKS of LOVE (14 inches were cut in all). She was ready for the big event but a bit impatient saying, “When can I go? When will you be done?” and “Do you have to blow dry it too?” It was asking a lot for a 5 year old to sit for a whole hour. Diana, of Portfolio Salon, having the patience of a saint, kept her interested while Mom was taking pictures and video taping. In the months leading up to the haircut we had often discussed how no matter what she’d look like afterwards it really wouldn’t matter because, unlike some kids, her hair will grow back.

I felt like I took in my little girl and brought out a young lady. As her Dad says, “Jillian has a kicky new do”. More importantly, she is learning a valuable lesson about giving this Christmas season. Jillian knows that her hair will help a sick child feel great about themselves. Her own grandmother had chemotherapy for breast cancer, but Jill didn’t think Mimi would look good as a blonde. I also told Jillian about my young friend Stephanie who got a wig when she lost her hair due to leukemia. While Mimi is doing great, we lost Stephanie after a 2-year battle. This event will remind us of all the angels we have in heaven. Needless to say, Jillian’s heart feels warm all over as does ours. Even the youngest of children have something special to give just like the drummer boy who only had his music to play for the baby Jesus.

Parents with young children might be interested in the book “The Giving Box” written by Mr. Rogers. You know, the man who sings “Won’t you be my neighbor?” This year, we decided to give Jill an allowance of $1.50 per week. She can spend 50¢, save 50¢, and donate 50¢ (i.e. church). We hope to teach the value of money, patience in saving for something really special as well as satisfying immediate gratification. Gumballs are at the top of her list. By the way, we are not tying this to any chores. We expect her to set and clear the table, feed the dog and clear the family room without pay because we are a family and a team. We help out each other because we love one another.

If ever your child is interested in donating a ponytail (it must be at least 10 inches long) we have all the details and would be happy to assist you. It takes 15 ponytails to complete one wig!

God Bless you this year and always.
