Couvade Part 1 and 2
Written by Joe Saunders.
Marcel Dupont was wandering though the park during his lunchtime. He had needed to get out of the office for some air and he needed fresh ideas. He had recently taken over from his father, the running of a chain of men’s fashion shops. The firm had been started by his great grandfather and from a single store, it was now a chain covering the country. The trouble was the company was stuck. It managed to compete with other men’s clothes retailers, but it needed something new. This had been exercising Marcel’s mind for some time now. Marcel hoped that wandering though the park might give him inspiration.
It was late summer and the days were no longer hot but still reasonably warm. As Marcel walked slowly on, deep in thought, he noticed the man coming in the other direction. Being a clothes retailer, Marcel couldn’t help but notice what he was wearing. He was dressed in a white tee-shirt stretched over a small but round stomach. Marcel thought it could either be a beer belly or the man might be taking part the reasonably new couvade programme and so might be pregnant. The latter was confirmed when they got closer and Marcel saw his paternity jeans. He thought no more of it as the man passed except that he couldn’t think why any man would want to be pregnant. It didn’t do a lot for the line of your clothes.
Marcel continued with his musings and hadn’t gone much further when he noticed another man very obviously pregnant who must have been reaching the end his pregnancy. He was waddling along wearing dungarees. Marcel wandered to himself why couvade clothing was so awful. He was sure something could be done to make it more stylish. It was then that the idea struck. As far as he knew the only place this kind of clothing was available was at the couvade clinic itself. Here was a gap in an expanding (in both senses of the word!) market which was something his company could fill.

Back at Dupont’s main store one of Marcel’s employees had had a bad morning. Josh Taylor had actually taken a good amount of business, but it had left him feeling upset. Ever since Josh and his partner, Steve, had decided in their college days that their relationship was life long, they wanted children. There were very few children to adopt and they certainly didn’t let children go to same sex couples, and the only other option was the Couvade programme. They had both read about this programme which enabled men to become pregnant and they had very occasionally seen men who could have been pregnant. Once Josh had had a pregnant man as a customer. The trouble was that Couvade was very expensive and neither of them was particularly well paid and what with the mortgage and everything, they knew they could never afford the treatment even if one of them was suitable for it.
Josh worked in the suit department of Duponts, and on this particular morning he had taken orders for wedding suits from what was obviously a wealthy groom. The groom, his best man and his best man’s son of about 2 years old came into the store. Josh’s heart hurt as he saw his father leading him by the hand. The groom and best man were obviously brothers and both had good athletic bodies which they were showing off in well fitting jeans and tight t-shirts. However, Josh couldn’t help noticing that the best man had quite a bit of a belly developing beneath his fine pecs. As he was the older of the two, he just put it down to filling out a bit. He was experienced with the male physique and most did that. Josh knew it would be happening to him all too soon if he didn’t look out.
The two men wanted suits made for themselves and the best man’s son and for the ushers that would come in for measuring by and by. Josh established that the wedding was to be in four months time, - a New Year wedding - which gave plenty of time for the suits all to be made. After they had chosen the cloth and the style, Josh started taking their measurements. When it came to the best man, the groom said:
“There is a slight difficulty here – Brian is pregnant, so he is going to grow a bit.” Josh desperately tried not to look surprised, but he obviously did.
“It’s OK” said the groom, “he’s really into this pregnancy lark. This is his second one – he had James a little over 2 years ago. He got pretty big by the end,”
“I had better explain” said the best man looking slightly embarrassed, “it would be highly dangerous for my wife’s health to have children, so as I am fit, and we can afford these things we decided that I should bear the children.”
Josh just nodded and looked.
“The trouble is that their family planning hasn’t fitted in with my wedding plans. Brian will be well over eight months gone by the time the wedding day comes. It won’t be very subtle by then. It isn’t now, really, is it? Still, it will be different having a hugely pregnant man giving the speech at the wedding. At least he won’t be in a fit state to shag the brides maids!”
“You’ll be surprised what you can do, even nine months gone,” countered Brian. Josh thought back to the last pregnant man he had fitted for a suit and remembered that he had suggested trousers with a very short rise that would fit tidily under the bulge. He suggested to Brian that he also got a handmade shirt which could be made nearer the time when the size required could be estimated better. Josh also suggested that he had the standard tail coat but that it could be buttoned up across his stomach with a watch chain. That way the coat could be worn when he was not pregnant.
It was eventually all sorted out and the men went away pleased by the sympathetic service they had received. Josh should have been pleased – there was a lot of commission in the orders he had taken for all those wedding suits this morning. But he was upset that here was a man who could afford to have children and a lovely family, and he and Steve couldn’t. Josh wasn’t sure that he wanted to be pregnant, but Steve could have the child and in fact if push came to shove they both would do anything to have a child.

A few days later Marcel was in a board meeting with his other directors, the marketing manager and a representative of the accounts department. He presented them with a paper of his new idea, and he could see that it wasn’t going to be an easy ride. Like most men, those present (well all except one) found the idea of getting pregnant abhorrent. So did Marcel, but he saw it as a marketing opportunity which was the most important thing for him. A lively debate ensued which resulted in a decision that they would go for it and get some designers involved.
They all agreed that the first task was to do a little more research, and the best way for that seemed to be to make contact with the couvade clinic. Not surprisingly, they were all reluctant to go – all that is except Gary from accounts, who said he would be interested in exploring it. His wife refused to have children and said if he wanted them, he would have to carry them. He did want children but he had always been too nervous to get ask at the clinic in case he got dragged into something he might later live to regret – like getting pregnant. Here was the perfect excuse to find out about it, without getting personally involved until he wanted to make any move towards getting pregnant himself.
He quickly made contact with the clinic and after being passed from pillar to post he eventually ended up talking to the right person and was able to fix an appointment to meet them a few days later. He didn’t tell his wife, Diana then because he wanted to find out exactly what pregnancy involved before he volunteered himself for such a thing.
The meeting turned out to be very useful as not only did he get the backing of the clinic that they would promote Duponts clothing, but he also was given all the literature given to those considering a male pregnancy. The PR people there had given Dupont’s request some thought and as a result, they thought the best way forward was to appoint one of their own people as a liaison person. They had picked a guy called Adam who was a lab technician in the embryology lab except on clinic days when he acted as a nurse. Like all staff of the clinic, if they were able they were impregnated. Adam had just begun his first pregnancy and was only 1 month into it. He had been highly critical of the pregnancy clothing available at the clinic (not that he needed it yet, but he had seen the clients wearing it) and had also put forward some ideas for designs which no one had done anything about. He seemed exactly the right guy for the job. The clinic also promised that Gary could meet with some of the clients to see their reaction to such a marketing enterprise. He couldn’t meet any that day because they only ran clinics two days a week and that day wasn’t one of them.
Gary couldn’t help but notice how quickly the other staff at the meeting left, leaving just him and Adam. They hit it off straight away. Adam was in jeans and shirt and there was no sign at all, as far as Gary could see, that he was pregnant. This was good as far as Gary was concerned. If he could be pregnant without anyone noticing for most of the pregnancy, he might be more open to doing this.
They shared a few preliminary ideas and got along so well that they decided it would be good to meet after work for a drink (non-alcoholic in Adam’s case) every week or so. Adam also told him that he was very interested in male pregnancy and the equality of the sexes, which is why he took the job. But he hadn’t bargained on being pregnant himself, he told Gary, as the chances of being of the correct blood type to carry a child of two parents, neither being yourself, was very small. He had taken a risk – hoping that he wouldn’t have to fulfil the rule he knew about. As it turned out, that wasn’t to be, but so far, being pregnant was not big deal for him. The only effect he had noticed so far was that he was hungry all the time.
* * * * *
A few weeks later Gary was back at the clinic meeting some of the clients. They didn’t seem surprised that he asked them questions about being pregnant as well as what they would want to see in clothing lines. But most men who were pregnant got lots of questions about what it was like because it was still relatively new so they were used to it. For his part, Gary could see the need for some different clothing lines. They were all wearing much the same thing which they had bought from the makeshift shop in the clinic. The men were pleased that, at last, there might be something different and more stylish to wear in their condition.
Gary was surprised how natural it all seemed as he sat round with these men who were all good looking and obviously had had good figures before they were pregnant. They all looked comfortable with their stomachs, even the ones who had got big and near the end of their pregnancies. It was this meeting that finally convinced him that he would mention it to Diana.
In fact, by the time he got back to his office he could think of nothing else but starting a family. He was busy convincing himself that a pregnancy would be no big deal for him. He reckoned his large frame and his physique which had got softer over the last few years should mean that only later in the pregnancy should his condition become obvious. His employers would obviously not worry; in fact it might be good for the promotion of their new product line if an employee was to wear the clothes. After all, it wasn’t as if he was in the public eye on the shop floor, but tucked away in an office.
He decided to give Adam a call and they agreed to meet after work that afternoon. Adam was at the bar before Gary sat on a bar stool. Gary couldn’t help but notice that either it was his shirt ballooning a bit or Adam had a very slight over hang on his trousers. As Adam stood, Gary saw it was the latter. Adam’s waist was just beginning to strain his pants a bit.
Adam saw him looking: “Do you think I am showing?”
“Not at all, it is just that your pants look a bit tight. A larger pair and you wouldn’t know.”
“Yeah, these are getting a bit tight now. Inevitable I suppose.”
Adam bought Gary a drink, to which Gary responded: “Well, here’s to the baby. How does it feel to be 2 months pregnant?”
“No different from not being pregnant really.” Adam replied. “Apart from my stomach being slightly less flat than it used to be, I wouldn’t know I was knocked up.”
“Haven’t you had morning sickness or anything?”
“Not at all, not even a hint of it. Apparently most guys don’t. We’re luckier than women in that respect.”
“And you don’t really show even though you’re two months gone. I am wondering about having a child myself, but wouldn’t want to look pregnant.”
“That’s kind of you to say, though I will in a couple of months, I guess, because I am only a small guy. No, someone like you with a bigger frame and a bit more flesh on them would hide it for ages. We’ve got one big guy at the clinic – bigger than you – who is eight months gone and hardly looks any different from before he was pregnant.”
This sounded good to Gary. There didn’t seem to be too many disadvantages to this pregnancy thing, he decided to broach it with Diane.
The following weekend, Gary managed to steer the conversation round to families. Diana had that ‘not that subject again’ look on her face. Her expression became incredulous as Gary explained this new option. To begin with it was quite a shock – the thought of her husband bearing their children – but it was a real way through her difficulty. She didn’t mind the thought of her eggs being harvested – it was just the whole thing about being pregnant that she didn’t like. So she agreed that they make an appointment with the clinic.
* * * * *
The weeks since his encounter with the pregnant best man had been difficult for Josh. He really wanted to have a family, but he knew that he and Steve could never afford it. Steve had noticed that Josh was getting down in the dumps and asked him what was bugging him. Josh kept shrugging it off saying it was nothing, but eventually, after Steve’s persistence, gave in and told him all about the best man and his kid.
Steve didn’t know what to say. He too wanted a family, and he thought that it would be really cool to get pregnant, but it obviously wasn’t affecting him as much as it was Josh. They had kind of joked about it in the past as they knew it was impossibility for them. They had read many articles on male pregnancy and knew that the male having the baby had to have the correct blood type, otherwise there was a high risk of the foetus being rejected, even if the donor egg was matched as carefully as possible. But it was all a pipe dream anyway, as it was so expensive.
* * * * *
Cost was not an issue for Diana and Gary. They both had well paid jobs, but even so, Gary planned on working for a discount as he was working for the clinic. The doctor who did the initial interview was not surprised to see Gary come as a client. He had seen him with Adam and some of the clients and knew that Gary wanted a child. So they both passed the psychological tests with flying colours. Then came the big problem – whether or not Gary was suitable or not. Gary knew this was a huge risk as only 50% of men were suitable to carry children of their own genes – even less if the man was just a surrogate with no common genes. The various tests were done and an appointment made for the following week.
It went by quickly as Duponts had got to the commissioning stage of the designs of their new clothing range. Because of all his work, Gary was heavily involved with this and it was up to him to see that the new line was in the shops for the spring of the following year. It didn’t give them much time as the production had to be set up.
Marcel Dupont was pleased with the progress that was being made, and also noted the enthusiasm with which Gary had taken on the project. He had seen Gary concentrating hard on all the information the clinic had given him, so it came as no surprise to know that Gary was still visiting the clinic. He was doing his job thoroughly – or so Marcel thought.
So a week later Gary and Diana were back at the clinic, and both were over-joyed to hear that Gary was suitable. They sat down to work out dates for harvesting an egg and fertilising it and the implantation date. The egg could be gathered from Diana at the beginning of November when sperm would be gathered from Gary and the foetus could be implanted round about the middle of November. This all sounded great, though Gary couldn’t help thinking it was all happening very quickly and he seemed to be in the roller coaster of it now. He would be pregnant at Christmas – what a present.

Poor old Josh was still unhappy. The pregnant best man had been in the store again with the ushers for measuring for their suits. He was obviously flourishing in his condition and seeing all that made Josh even more miserable. However, an encounter in a pub one night changed all that. They got chatting to a bit of a hunk of a man but with a fairly prominent belly. He was obviously not ashamed of it as he had a tee shirt on that was stretched tightly over it. In the course of conversation, refusing an alcoholic drink in fact, the hunk told them that he was part of the Couvade programme and was six months pregnant. He didn’t have a partner, but he acted as a surrogate to those who wanted children but didn’t want to bear them. This was his fourth pregnancy in as many years. He enjoyed being pregnant and it meant he didn’t have to work, as his contract was for 15 years so the clinic was able to pay him a salary and he was paid enough to live on for the children he bore.
They talked on and the hunk could tell they were really interested, so after a bit the he asked them if they wanted to see some pictures of his pregnancies. He carried these pictures everywhere as he found that people were often interested. He showed them pictures of the various stages of his pregnancy and his body afterwards. It was impressive to see how he got back into shape between pregnancies. Both Josh and Steve noticed that he had gained a bit of muscle mass from before the first pregnancy until after the third, particularly in is butt and thighs. He was obviously very much into being up the duff as there were lots of photos. They had a good conversation about what it was like when you got really big and what it was like to give birth. The hunk was very positive about the whole thing. And he was in it for the money as well as the experience.
Steve and Josh both had the idea at the same time. What if they could do a deal with the couvade clinic and one of them bore enough children to pay for their own? They decided it was worth a try.
On returning home, they had a long discussion as to who should carry the babies. Steve was the obvious choice. He had a good strong build and having a large frame and being 175lb or so, a pregnancy would not look as big on him as it would on Josh who had a small frame and was barely 140lb even though he was nearly 6 foot. However, they knew that there were many more factors involved than that, so it was with some trepidation that they made an initial appointment and a few weeks later found themselves talking to one of the doctors and put their suggestion to him.
Steve and Josh were both amazed at how readily the doctor agreed to such a scheme. His only proviso was that one of them was suitable as a birth parent. But both Josh and Steve knew that this was always a risk. Apparently the clinic was desperate to recruit men who were willing to act as surrogates. They talked in detail about contracts and the money involved. If it were possible with either Josh or Steve, they would have to agree to three pregnancies before having their first child and a further two pregnancies for each subsequent child of their own. The person dealing with the contract said to them that they would have to sign the contract before any suitability tests were done, agreeing that one of them would go through with three pregnancies minimum, if a suitable birth parent. If they signed the contract the clinic would take the risk that neither of them would be suitable.
It was all happening a bit fast. Neither Steve nor Josh had realised it could happen this easily so they decided to go to and think about it for a few days. Both had to consider whether or not they would go through with such a contract. They had already discussed that they would like at least two children in their family - that would mean seven pregnancies for whoever got to be the birth parent. That was at least seven years to complete their family if they kept with two kids. However, as both of them were in their early-mid twenties this didn’t really seem an issue. They talked more about the effect it would have on the body of whoever it was would bear the children. They had seen what pregnancy had done to so many women. But then there was that hunk they met, and he seemed to be doing alright body wise.
After a lot of discussion, including seeking out men who had been pregnant to see what they looked like now, they both came to the conclusion that the family was the most important thing. They had also read that men found it much easier to regain shape after birth than women did. But after seven or more pregnancies? Who was to say, but they knew they were both prepared to go for it.
* * * * *
In the meantime, the clinic was creating a foetus for Gary’s pregnancy. Another morning at the clinic meant that on 14th November Gary became pregnant. He went back to work and on his way home popped into the clinic for a quick pregnancy test to confirm it.
Gary went home pregnant that night and to celebrate the event Diana cooked him his favourite meal, and plenty of it. As she pointed out there were two to feed now.
At work next day, Gary noted that he didn’t feel any different to norm, which was just as well as there was a series of meetings of the coming dates to finalise the choice of designs and the production of them up and running. Gary needed to be completely on the ball for this.
The negotiations all went very well and Marcel was very pleased with all the work Gary had done. Gary himself felt on top of the world. He felt really well and hardly believed he was pregnant. But that was all to change.
That evening, he suddenly had a desperate need to share his secret with someone else. He hadn’t seen Adam for a bit and decided to give him a call to see if he would like a drink on the way home from work.
This time Gary was waiting for Adam at the bar and bought him a drink. Gary’s belly was overlapping his waistband too as Adam’s was the first time they had met, but that was because of Gary’s flabby belly rather than being pregnant. After all, he had only been up the duff a day! He noticed Adam was now wearing elasticated pants, though nothing showed yet. Gary couldn’t really tell that he was getting bigger, though he guessed that the must be.
Gary shared his news, and Adam was really pleased and said that it was probably he who had prepared the embryo as he did most of them. That was a nice link to have, they thought. Adam was able to tell Gary that he had had his 13 week scan and everything was as it should be.
“I have now just started the second trimester, which is the time guys really start to grow,” he continued, “most guys my size start showing in the fourth month. I don’t know if I am looking forward to that really. I seem to have put on quite a lot of weight already.”
Gary assured him that it didn’t show at all and that nobody would guess his condition. They continued chatting about this and that for half an hour or so, before going home.
Steve and Josh returned to the clinic a week later with their decision. They had easily agreed that Steve should be tested first as he had the more appropriate body for this kind of thing, but if he was not suitable then Josh would be tested. After a couple of hours of tests, they were sent home and told to return in a week’s time for the results. What a long week of waiting - they thought it would never come to an end.
Eventually, the time for their appointment came round and they went into the doctor’s office who told them that Steve would reject any embryo that was implanted in him. Steve didn’t know whether to be upset or relieved. He had really wanted children, but he was proud of his good body shape and didn’t really want it ruined. The tests were done on Josh and they went home again for another week of waiting.
Josh didn’t really know what to think during that week. He really wanted children, but he wondered how his small frame would cope. Steve pointed out that they could pack it in after four pregnancies, but to Josh whose body was going to have them, it seemed a lot. Josh had noted that all the pictures he had seen of pregnant men seemed to be a lot beefier than him and that hunk they had met in the bar certainly was. Josh also knew that he found it difficult to build muscle or gain weight, but maybe he would have a smaller pregnancy than these beefier types. Then again, he probably wasn’t a suitable pregnancy candidate anyway.
A week later they found out that Josh’s genetic make up was perfect for pregnancy. They were both shocked that their greatest wish could become a reality. The doctor told them how lucky they were because only about 10% of men were suitable to carry children where the client didn’t provide the sperm. Steve noted that with Josh carrying the children he could be the father of them. Josh didn’t quite know whether to feel joy or dread. What would it mean to get a belly, how would people react to a man being pregnant? The couvade programme had been around for five years or so, but there weren’t that many who took advantage of it, though it wasn’t a new idea now. Josh thought pregnant men looked hot but he knew he would get some flack as he grew. He also knew there was no choice - they had signed the contract. If they backed down now there would be financial penalties they couldn’t afford.
The doctor explained that they could go ahead straight away if they wanted to and embryo prepared for implantation in two weeks time. They looked at one another and instantly agreed there was no point in waiting about
A fortnight later they were both back at the clinic and Josh was taken away for the embryo to be put in his body. Josh wasn’t gone long when they both came back again. It had all been done and Josh was surprised how relatively painless it had all been. The doctor told them to come back in four hours so that they could do a pregnancy test on Josh, to see it was all OK
So they went off to lunch and it was as if nothing had happened. Josh had been told there was no need to act any differently except not to do anything too strenuous for a week. They reflected as they were waiting for the hours to pass that it was better financially that Josh was pregnant because Steve had the better salary. There was a group trying to get paternity leave a right for pregnant men, but so far this hadn’t been made law. So Josh would have to have some time off work but hopefully not too much
Towards the end of the afternoon, they went back to the clinic. The pregnancy test was quickly done and showed a positive result. The doctor gave them a kit to test again in a week, but he said it was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Unless the test was negative he didn’t need to see Josh again until his 13 week scan. He told Josh that men didn’t usually suffer from morning sickness as severely as women, but that he could expect swollen and very sensitive testicles especially after the first three months. He told Josh that he would otherwise notice very little difference in anything until the first scan and wouldn’t start growing much ‘til his second trimester.
That sounded good to Josh and Steve who had already decided that they wouldn’t tell anyone until Josh started to show. Josh wondered how his boss at work would take it. Being in the suit department, he was expected to look smart at all times. He knew he could get away with a bit of a gut because it could be hidden under a jacket, but that could only be done for so long. To be honest he was probably one of the slimmer ones, but there was a chap moved on a couple of months back because he was not presenting the right image after he had put on weight. So he didn’t know how he would fare with his employers in the later stages of his pregnancy.
* * * * *
Quite by chance, Adam and Gary decided to meet that same day for a drink after work. Both were on non-alcoholic now of course. As before Gary beat Adam to it, and so was able to see him enter the bar. There was no doubt now that Adam had a bit of a gut on him, though it could so easily have been a small beer gut. His elasticised pants sat nicely beneath it. As Gary bought Adam a drink, he could feel Gary looking at his belly
“I told you I would start to show this month,” said Adam “and I have not disappointed you have I? This thing is getting a bit big, and I’m only four months gone
“You look great,” assured Gary. “It just looks like a bit of a beer gut, that’s all. You had better get used to it because it will only get bigger"
“A lot bigger, I’m afraid. Still, I had my monthly check today and everything is perfect, much to my relief. This still seems a strange thing to be doing. I’m not sure I’ve completely got my head round it yet. Anyway, how are you? You look much the same as before.” Said Adam looking pointedly at Gary’s flabby middle.
“Yeh, I’m fine thanks. I don’t seem to have put on any weight yet. These pants are as tight as they ever have been. You’re right about the morning sickness. Thankfully, I have had none of that.”
But he had spoken too soon. The very next day, Gary woke up feeling terrible. Morning sickness had struck and was to be the bane of his life for the next two months. Diana appeared very sympathetic, but she secretly smiled inside – it was good to see a man suffer in this way for a change. However, her ideas for fattening him up in general, with the excuse of feeding two had to be forgotten as he lost his appetite altogether. Diana hoped it would come back
After a couple of days of this, Gary rang the clinic and explained the problem. They told him to go in for a prescription to help relieve the symptoms. While he was there he was called in for a private meeting with one of the staff.
“This is strictly confidential, and I am sharing information with you that I shouldn’t, but in view of the current project you are involved with, I thought you would like to know” the doctor confided in Gary. “One of your floor staff was impregnated yesterday and would just be beginning his second trimester when you plan to launch your new range. So he would just be beginning to grow faster then. He could actually be a feature of your new department because he has signed a contract to be a surrogate for three pregnancies and I think he will have at least seven"
The doctor gave Gary Josh’s contract details and his method of affording a family. Gary was very interested and would give him every encouragement to be pregnant for many years. It would save him going public on his own pregnancy too - for a while, at least. He knew Josh and he would make a great model for the clothes, as well as perhaps heading up the paternity clothing department. This was excellent news indeed. He returned to work feeling slightly less as if he was about to throw up, but kept this news to himself just for the time being. However, he did tell Marcel, who couldn’t believe the good timing of it. He made a note to go and observe Josh at work over the next few days.
Marcel didn’t actually get around to going down onto the shop floor for the next week. The run up to Christmas was always busy. However, when he did get down there, he couldn’t believe his eyes. There was a wedding party having the final fitting for their suits and one of them looked as if he was about to pop any day.
This time, when Josh saw the best man coming, he felt joy because he knew he was now pregnant too – not with his own child – but he knew that one day he would be.
Marcel was very impressed by the way in which Josh dealt with the pregnant man and the fact that the suit fitted him so well with that huge belly. Josh would go far he thought and he had no doubts he was just the man for heading up their new department.
Josh didn’t know what to think about this particular customer. Somehow his huge belly was very sexy and a great turn on for Josh, but at that moment he dreaded being the same size as this. There was just no hiding it. He again wondered what he had started, while still being pleased that they were on the way to starting a family.
* * * * *
Christmas came and went. As far as Josh knew, the best man was still pregnant for the wedding. Josh enjoyed Christmas. Gary didn’t as he still felt so ill the whole time. Most people gain weight over Christmas – but it fell off Gary, much to Diana’s annoyance.
New Year’s Eve came and Josh and Steve went out partying. Was it Josh’s imagination, or did his tight jeans feel a bit tighter in the waist. Josh decided it was probably psychosomatic. Diane and Gary would have gone partying together, but Gary felt awful so Diane went on her own.
Across the city there were two more parties going on. A stag night was being held, being hosted by a very pregnant Brian, who was in very good form. Brian’s brother, David, the Bride Groom, was amazed at how much energy his huge brother had. David’s future wife was also holding her hen party that night. Brian’s wife, as chief bridesmaid had organised that.
After a couple of hours, when they had all had time to have enough alcohol to loosen up, Brian’s mobile rang. He went out into the corridor to take the call to get away from the noise. After a few minutes he waddled back into the hall, using his belly to push his way through the crowd with a grin on his face. Everyone wondered what was up.
The next time David went off to relieve himself of all the beer he was drinking, Brian got them altogether and explained what the phone call had been about. The girls at the hen party had been discussing his pregnancy, when the bride to be said it would be great if David got pregnant. She knew it was very unlikely because they could never afford the treatment. Then someone else said they could have collection and involve the boys in it too and make a kind of collective wedding present. All the girls had agreed, and the boys now thought this a good idea too, even though each would have to contribute generously for the scheme to be viable. Some of the less fit ones of the group thought it would be great to see David, who was so proud of his athletic body, get a belly.
The guys bided their time before they told David what they were going to do. But after several more drinks they saw their moment. David was drunk enough to agree to the plan but not so far gone that he couldn’t sign the agreement they had drawn up. When it was suggested to him David’s reaction was: “If Brian can have children, so can I. Being pregnant will be no problem for a fit guy like me.” Brian smiled inwardly to himself as David obviously had little understanding of what it was like to be as big as he was now. David readily signed the agreement.
A few days later, at the wedding, the very pregnant Best Man got up to do his speech. After thanking and toasting all the usual people and reading the cards, he presented the wedding present. David had forgotten all about the agreement he had signed, he had thought it just a joke and so looked surprised when it was handed over to them both. However, he was relaxed enough with all the alcohol flowing to accept it gracefully.
It was a bit different the next morning though. David suddenly realised what all this meant. He would have to give up his sport and his six-pack would disappear for nine months at least. And he thought about how Brian looked now. He looked splendid in a way, in his huge pregnant state, but it wasn’t just his belly that had expanded. In recent weeks, as in his past pregnancy, his butt had got bigger and his pants for the wedding looked as if they had been sprayed on they were so tight. However, as he was now married to the best girl in the world and she really wanted this, he agreed to do it. After all the money couldn’t be spent on anything else, and he would have Brian to support him, who had experience in these things. He just prayed he wouldn’t get as big as Brian was now. They decided to go ahead as soon as possible. So, thought David, by this time next year it could all be over. I’ll just be trying to get my body back.

Back at Dupont’s, everything was going much as the doctor said it would for Josh. He and Steve continued their lives as normal in those early months of the New Year. Once or twice Josh felt queasy in the morning, but nothing very serious. There were other symptoms though that happened sooner than expected. They were out in the car one Saturday night going to see some friends. Josh had his favourite pants on which showed off his slim figure well.
“Do you know Steve; these pants are getting darned tight. I think this is the last time I shall be wearing them for a bit. I think my gut is looking rounder too"
“Don’t be daft” replied Steve “the doc said you wouldn’t notice any weight gain for at least two months, we’ve hardly had one yet. You’re just imagining it.”
“I’m not, or they have shrunk. There is definitely not as much room in them as there used to be. And I wish now I had worn a less close fitting T shirt, they will see my belly getting rounder. You know what they are like.”
“They won’t notice anything – you look great”.
And of course Steve was right nobody did notice anything and they had a great evening, though on future occasions Josh was careful to wear clothes that were less figure hugging.
A few weeks later, with still a month to go before the first scan, Steve just happened to glance at Josh side-on as he came out of the shower.
“Hey, Josh, turn sideways for me again”
“What for?”
“I want a better view of that baby belly you’re getting. It seems to have grown on you all of a sudden”
“I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago but you said there was nothing to see. Do you think I am getting big now?”
“Not at all, you’re just getting a rather cute curve on your stomach. You look fantastic.”
Josh ran his hands over the yet very small curve of his belly. It was becoming quite noticeable to him, and now apparently Steve as well. He was sure it wasn’t supposed to be growing as fast as this yet. Steve could see he looked upset and went across to him and took him in his arms.
“You were made to be pregnant. You look so hot now and as you grow will be even hotter. I am sure this is just normal growth, but looks a lot on you because you are so slim. At nine months you will have a wonderful body.”
“But I don’t want to be huge. I don’t know why I agreed to this. Nothing is supposed to show yet, but you have spotted I am bigger. I shall be the size of an elephant by the end.”
Steve tried to reassure him that he wouldn’t be, while secretly hoping he would get as big as a house. Steve would love that, and deep down he thought that Josh would too once he had got used to the idea. It was just a question of time.
Josh was just relieved it was Sunday and he could relax in sweat pants rather than try to fasten his suit pants around his thickening middle. He had been very conscious of his stomach over the last week or so every time he dressed for work. As he did his shirt up his hands were pushed out slightly doing up the buttons as they came to his belly. He was concerned that he may grow so much before the first scan that he would have to come clean very soon about his condition.

At the beginning of March there was the final meeting before the launch. Gary was relieved that he was feeling better, though he had lost quite a bit of weight, and still not completely regained his appetite. His 13 week scan was fine except that the noted that the baby was small, probably because Gary had been so unwell. In fact Gary’s waist was inches smaller than when the pregnancy began and his pants were seriously loose. Gary was not unhappy with that. The smaller he could stay the better in his mind. He had not seen Adam for months as he was usually so tired after work, and felt so dreadful, that after work all he wanted to do was get home.
The launch was still a well kept secret, though all the plans were in place. Everything was ready, but Josh had yet to be appointed, and like most other people in Dupont’s, he knew nothing about it. The meeting came on to discussing Josh’s appointment. Marcel opened the discussion:
“I’m minded to have a bit of fun over this one. Let’s wind Josh up a bit. After all, he hasn’t yet informed us of a medical condition he has. You are sure he is pregnant, Gary.”
“The clinic assured me that the initial tests were positive though we shan’t know for definite until his first scan. However, he is definitely putting on weight. I have been keeping an eye on him and he now never takes his jacket off in the staff rest room, and you can see the front of his jacket sticking on his new gut. I would say it’s 99% certain he’s pregnant.”
“Good, then I intend to have some fun with this young man. I’ll arrange for him to come to my office in a week or so’s time. We don’t need him to know about the launch too soon, and if it turns out he is just getting fat, then we will have to launch in a different way.”
Ten days later, as Josh was on his morning break, jacket still fastened, he received a message that Mr Dupont wished to see him immediately. What could this be about, he wondered? His first thought was that he was to be fired, but quickly realised there were plenty of people lower down that could do that to him. But it was still with fear and trepidation that he knocked on the door a couple of minutes later.
He walked in on Marcel’s invitation and remained standing in the middle of the huge, well appointed room. Marcel looked Josh over and walked around him as if to observe him from all angles. Was it very hot in there, or was it just because Josh was nervous?
“Stand up straight boy; I won’t have my floor staff slouching”. Josh didn’t want to stand up straight; it made the front of his jacket stick out a bit.
“That’s better” said Marcel as Josh drew himself up to his full height. “You look rather warm; please take your jacket off.”
“It’s OK sir, I’m fine with it on”. Mr Dupont would be sure to spot his small belly if he took it off.
“I said take your jacket off boy.”
“Yes sir,” Josh’s heart sank. This could be the end of his job. As he removed the jacket, he tried to pull his shirt out of his waist band a bit to try and disguise the small bulge beneath it.
“Tuck your shirt in properly” said Marcel as he looked over Josh again. Josh did as he was told. “That’s better”.
Josh’s shirt was now pulled taught over the small lump and he was very aware of his tie resting on it. Josh felt fat and very uncomfortable.
“I see you’re filling out a bit. Those pants look a bit tight.” Josh looked a bit shame-faced. “Are you going to get any fatter?”
“Yes sir, I mean no sir, I don’t know sir” stammered Josh not knowing what to say.
“It looks to me as if you are going to get a lot fatter. I can’t have fat people selling well cut suits. That would be very bad for our image and trade. I shall have to move you to another department.”
Josh looked crestfallen. He liked it where he was and the people he worked with.
Mr Dupont continued: “you need to be in a department where your growing gut will be an asset rather than something to be hidden. If it grows much more you will not be able to hide it in a jacket. It’s obvious to the trained eye now. Do you reckon your belly will grow some more in the near future?”
“Yes sir”
“Indeed ‘yes sir’. I know the condition you are in. You have been seen in the couvade clinic and by the look of that gut the treatment was successful”
Josh wondered how on earth Mr Dupont could know that, but he couldn’t deny it. He wondered where he was to be sent to. Obviously not the sales floor – you wouldn’t want a nine month pregnant man in the sports or casual department. He would probably get sent to stores, though how he would cope in there when he got big he really didn’t know.
“Fortunately for you, pregnant boy, we need someone to head up a new department in paternity wear. I have watched you dealing customers, particularly that pregnant guy who wanted a wedding suit at Christmas, and I am impressed. You’ve got what it takes to do this in more ways than one” said Marcel pointedly looking at Josh’s cute bulge.
Josh couldn’t believe he was hearing this. This was absolutely great – promotion to his own department.
“I am prepared to offer you a ten year contract in this new job, with all our usual terms and conditions.” Marcle pushed the papers across the desk to him. He couldn’t help but notice how pronounced Josh’s gut was on his small frame as he bent down to write on them.
Josh had no hesitation in signing it though he should have read the small print more closely because it was committing him to a pregnancy every year of the ten years for which the contract ran. He had also forgotten for the time being the clause that said that floor assistants could be fired if the management considered them no longer presentable for the job.
“That’s all very good” said Marcel as Josh finished signing papers. “We launch in at the end of March. Hopefully you will be a bit bigger by then to show off our new clothes to the full. I will now hand you over to the head of men’s clothing you will help you set up the department. You will not be selling a suit for a bit – unless it is a paternity one.”
Josh left and was taken along the corridor to the head of men’s clothing who was expecting him. Even though he had put his jacket back on again, he felt the eyes of Mr Evans go to his small but expanding middle. Mr Evans was in his shirt sleeves and suggested Josh do the same as they sat down to discuss plans for the new department. Josh wasn’t so shy about taking off his jacket this time, and although he looked closely, Mr Evans made no comment about Josh growing.
There was much to plan and discuss – the layout, the sales strategy, which staff would assist and the modelling of the new clothes. Mr Evans wanted Josh to be the model and proposed to leave the first photo shoot as late as possible so that Josh really looked pregnant. In the meantime Josh went on a modelling course. Josh was relieved that he was doing this course early in the pregnancy as his training was with other aspiring models with flat abs. His still small stomach looked huge amongst the rest, and he could tell they were wondering what he was doing there. There were various comments about him slimming down before he would get any work, but he stayed the course.
