The
Sorcerer
Fall 2005 |
This was my second Sorcerer, the first being
the one with Ahrimanes. Again, my
contribution centered around a
very short and hellish section of the play. This time around I
provided the mechanism and design for the portal through which a
character is carried off to the underworld.

This photo shows the set in its happy
state. The upstage arch
(with the big "M" for Marmaduke, not
Michigan) transforms. You can see that the stage left side looks
a bit skewed. That's because it is. That panel and the
panel on the opposite side are periaktoi, which is Greek for "spinning
thingamambobs used in theater stuff". Each periaktos had a
trangular footprint, much like the letters Vanna White used to turn on
Wheel of Fortune before it went digital. They were spun to show a
different side when thery were hellish.

This is what the back the set looked like
when converted to hell. The lighting is extreme and my
camera is crap, but this gives a decent idea of the components.
Three pairs of glowing eyes, glowing fires on the plinth, stone snake
columns (on the periaktoi), and a stone gargoyle on top, flown in on
cables.

This shot was taken by the
costume designer Marilyn Gouin. Much better photo. |
Erik (my son) was actually in the show. He operated a
bunch of
gags from inside a box during the title character's introductory
song. Here are a few of them: |
a jumping tick |
a lighted crystal ball
|
a possessed puppet |
A well-deserved curtain call. |
