Questions on Hewitt

Family
Glynn & Sherilyn

How many brothers/ sisters?
One sister, Jaslyn, who is two years younger than me.

What are her special interests?
She's still in high school (Year 12), but she plays tennis.

Any family members with prominent sports backgrounds?
Dad played Australian Rules Football for 15 years from early 70s to mid 80s. My mum played professional netball for South Australia and she was a physical education teacher. I come from a sporting background and it has helped me a lot. They understand the pressure that I am going through at certain times through my career because dad had been through that pressure and my mum had obviously been through it as well. I suppose they probably know how to handle it a little bit and what to expect when I am preparing for a match.

Who is the most inspirational person in your life?
There's probably a few, obviously including my family. My coach Darren Cahill has probably been the main one. Pat Rafter, John Newcombe all sort of come underneath them.

If you weren't a tennis player, what would you be?
I would have tried to play Australian Rules Football.

How do you deal with popularity?
If you're trying to be at the top of your sport, it's part of being a professional athlete. You've got to give up time to sign autographs and take photos. It does get very hectic when you are walking around the streets and people want your autograph, or photo. Australia is pretty demanding in that respect.

Outside of a big win, what is your "Ideal Day"?
Play 18 holes of golf, watch the Crows win a premiership and go out to the Planet Nightclub (which Darren Cahill owns in Adelaide).

Apart from the tennis, what do you like most about being a tennis player?
Playing in so many different countries and playing every week- if you do lose one week you get to play next week.

What do you like least about being a tennis player?
You're under a lot of pressure all the time and always in the public eye.

How do you cope with the constant travel?
I go to the tournaments I like to play and the places I really enjoy, so that makes it a little easier on me. I've played very little in Europe.

What do you plan to do after tennis?
My biggest dream is to be as successful as possible, whatever I am doing.
