Remco's Lost in Space robot was
first released in 1966, and I
believe kept in production for the
next four years. During this
period, I received TWO of these as
gifts. This is notable primarily
because these often hideously
colored toys now routinely fetch
prices in the $300-400 range on E-
Bay and have even sold for over
$1000. Woe is me. This is all a
little surprising since the toy is a
generally poor representation of
the beloved B-9 robot from the TV
series. The Remco robot came in
MANY color combinations
including a rather revolting red
and blueish combo,orange and
black, red and black, (pretty cool
looking) and even all-black.The
fact that the robot on the series
was nearly completely silver in
color obviously didn't faze the
manufacturer. This didn't bother
me as a kid, but it bothered a
friend of mine enough to spray
paint his grey (he couldn't get his
hands on silver paint
apparently). The dimensions were
also quite inaccurate. Poor Robot
seemed rather squished and
stubby. No myriad blinking lights
either; Just a single white light in
his chest. His motion was an
unexciting forward movement-no
remote control or "bump and go"-
He just kind of bumped and
whined helplessly. The inaccurate
and cheesy stickers on the sides
representing the "tracks" were a
new high in low. I did think the
semi-detailed "chest" area of the
robots were pretty neat as a kid,
and they were fun to take apart
and put back together. I imagine
the fate of my robot friends had
something to do with this
pastime. As half-baked as these
toys were, I want one. Dammit.

A sickly color combination,
even by Remco standards.
