Guide to Handling

There's not much to know about handing Guinea Pigs, just that you need to make them feel safe at all times. They don't like to be yanked out of their cages at high speeds. It makes them feel unstable and more likely to be jumpy. Especially with a new animal, you need to take care when picking up and holding your Cavy.

Picking her up:As you can see here, even children are able to scoop up the animal in a way that makes her feel safe. With a hand under her front paws and one under her bottom, the animal is stabilised which prevents her being startled and falling.
Cuddling your Cavy: Hold the animal close to you, preferably on your chest. Hold the animal softly, but in a way that supports her at all times. If you find that your Guinea Pig struggles and bites, try holding her in a towel and giving her treats so she begins to associate you with good things.
