My brother had found another friend on the Pro Tour with a connection. A DIRECT connection to the band... A pro golfer friend of his was GOOD friends with Eddie Van Halen... And Rich was able to score 5 tickets... We only had three people lined up to go.. So I asked the only Van Halen fan I knew at the time if he wanted to go... My SCIENCE TEACHER! My brothers and I invited Mr. Knight (Gary) and Mrs. Knight
(Michelle) both of whom, like me, had never seen Van Halen live. So the Knights picked me up and we would've been all peachy-keen... But the crotch of my jeans ripped apart right when I sat down in the car. Well, after that setback we were ready to go. First, because I was their VH connection, they treated me to dinner at T.G.I. Fridays... And I got a glimpse of the inside of Gary Knight's house... The amount of records and cds he has is incredible... Anyway, we got this certain card that Michelle uses at Friday's and into the restaurant we walked... And I in a really old Van Halen shirt that, on the back, in really big letters says "VAN HALEN KICKS ASS!!" Plus, the shirt is about two sizes too small on me. I got a lot of stares. Anyway, we had some good food before the show, and we drove down, caught some MEAN traffic, and we finally got to my youngest older brother's house. Then it was to Riverbend we went! We got there after about an hour of driving, and we located my oldest brother. (the one with tha connection, G...) He said I needed to get a new shirt and stuff, so we got that... We were not able ot get passes like my brother said, but it was a GREAT show, anyway. We were in the pavillion part of the venue, and so close, you can see the expressions on their faces. I was genuinely amazed by Eddie's live playing ability. It was some of the greatest playing I'd ever seen. Alex Van Halen was constantly pounding out the beat at a furious pace and Michael Anthony downed damn near a WHOLE BOTTLE of Jack  Daniels before singing the lead vocals one of the songs. And Gary Cherone... He was awesome. I have no idea why a lot of fans didn't like him. He sounded like Sammy, and had the energy of Dave on the stage. All-in-all, it was one damn good show!!!!! But the next one I saw was better.
While I don't have my ticket stub from the Spetember 5th, 1998 show, up in East Troy, WI. I do have The VIP pass you see to your left, a Meet And Greet pass, and a PICTURE of my brother, two of his friedns, the BAND and ME!!!!!!!! I tell you, missing Kenny Wayne Shepherd for the second time was WORTH meeting one of my favorite bands of all time! They were all REALLY nice guys and stuff... I must say that Eddie's hands felt like my grandpa's... Very fleshy palms and fingers... Soft and such... BUT... That's not the point here! The point is that I MET EDDIE! And because of that, I am the envy of a kid in my English class! Hee hee... Anyway, the show was absolutley spectacular! Lots of onstage antics and such. The roadies and road crew all did a
conga line during Alex's drum solo when he got to those bongos and congas and stuff! Alex started laughing his ass off! This show was even better than the Cincinatti show! Absolutley marvelous... I can't wait to see them live again. :)
Click on the above pass to see what it got me!
And yes, that's me on the end NEXT TO EDDIE!!!!! He's pretty short... :)
Mama, you're going home...
